First, glad to be here. DEDICATED Ghost user. Carried RIGHT on through to Veritas. Can't beat the reliability, and the intuitive nature of this product. Has savved my bacon on more than one occasion.
For the first time ever I'm using the product to backup a SINGLE file each day, my Outlook PST. Can't understand the results I'm seeing. Please can anyone advise?
The file itself is big - around 8Gb (I know! I need to archive.) The results I'm getting are:
Two Folders - one with four to five files. Another, completely empty.
Is this normal? Somehow I was expecting just...a copy of the file itself? And, why is there an empty folder each time?
Second thing, the only option I'm given in selecting the created icon in the Staus window when I select the icon on any given date is... "Restore". Questions: is the thinking there that...there are no fileS to "Explore", as it is just a single file? So, my only given option is restore alone?
And, with the four or five files in the folder that HAS data...somehow Veritas is going to stich these back together to make my PST should I ever need to restore the file?
And, if yes...really? Can that work? Somehow doing the Incremental daily backup of the whole system and having the explore option seems more viable? Or, is it all the same under the hood?
Solved! Go to Solution.

I probably should have just pointed you to this technote:
- What are the different file types created with Veritas System Recovery backups?
however I can confirm the upgrade from 16 to 21 went smoothly and files backed up using 16 were restorable using 21.
The only pain was I kept choosing Operating Systems too new for VSR 16 (which is now getting a bit long in the tooth) and it wouldn't install. Also using a trial version doesn't help when upgrading, however I presume that won't be a problem for you, though I would advise you have your v21 license details ready.

Which product exactly are you using? Veritas System Recovery or Ghost?
Ghost is a Symantec product (now Broadcom) https://www.broadcom.com/products/cyber-security/endpoint/management/ghost-solutions-suite

Please upload photos in the body of a post or else as attachment.
I have edited your post as we do not appreciate unrelated URLs..
Let's see if a System Recovery expert can assist with your issue.

That sounds about right - VSR breaks the backup files into chunks. You have the option to customize the size of these chunks when you create the original backup (recovery point options - advanced - tick 'divide into smaller files to simplify archiving' and select the appropriate size - from 100 > 9180MB )
However its worth noting that VSR 16 goes End-of-Life in a month - details here: (choose System Recovery and hit Submit)
so we would recommend upgrading to the latest version which is currently 21.2
Its always worth running a test restore every once in a while to check what you're backing up is restorable.

Ah! I know what you mean about the links. Will do. I TRIED with the one above you helped with. But, somehow it wouldn't let me upload the images.

Thanks fo the detailed reply! I'm grateful, and for the heads up on the EOL!
EOL!!! :D Are there any links for upgrading?

You can find the latest version in the Veritas Download center: https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/downloads
If your current licenses are registered in your name and you have active maintenance, you can download software and upgrade free of charge. Else, reach out to your local Veritas partner.

Hello Marianne & PJ!
Those are the DEETS! THank you SO MUCH!
01-06-2021 08:39 AM
Ah! Product maintenance. Uh, oh. I think I only have the product itself. Please can you share links about maintenance? It may be too late for THIS product, but I can add it to 21.

I am not aware of any links. Maybe I could search for a link that explains what is covered by different levels of maintenance.
Other than that - it is as simple as being quoted for new licenses that will always include maintenance for the 1st year. After that, you should receive notification from Veritas when maintenance renewal is due.
If you are working with a 'good' Veritas partner, they should contact you more or less at the same time to find out if the current licenses are still sufficient, do you need more, or different type of licenses, or just renewal...
You can also read up about ' Expired Maintenance Upgrade SKUs ' in the VSR Licensing Guide:

Using Veritas 16 all my filenames end in .v2i
If I upgrade to the latest version will I still be able to read the files?

I just tried to dowload the Trial Version of Veritas System Recovery 21 and I got an error saying:
Veritas System Recovery Basic Edition does not support Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
And, then the installation stopped.
What do you think is happening? What link do I need for a Trail Version I can use on my Win 10 machine?
And, can Veritas System Recover 21 open the .v2i files made with my 16 version?

Yes, unfortunately the download site for the trialware is not clear on which version to use for OS-type.
I ran into exactly the same error and tried for hours to find out what the issue was.
I eventually found this line in the SCL (Software compatibility list):
Basic editon is not supported on Desktop Operating systems
Please try this one: Veritas System Recovery 21.2 MULTILINGUAL
**** EDIT ****
One more thing - I ran into another error during installation.
The 1st article in this post helped me: https://vox.veritas.com/t5/System-Recovery/Useful-links-for-VSR-Installation-issues-and-resolutions/...
Look at the Solution section.
Best to perform the 'Unblock' before you unzip the file.

Hopefully a VSR expert can answer your question about reading previous version backups.
Other Veritas products (that I have experience with) work like that. So, I am confident that it will be the same for VSR.

Yes I can confirm that hasn't changed and version 21 is backward compatible. For info attached is a screenshot of some of my V21 backup files.
OK - didn't seem to like attaching my jpg to the post. Will try one more time...

Hi Marianne & PJ,
Marianne - Wow! The EXACT same thing as I experienced! I'll give the Multilingual a shot & uncheck like indicated in that first article link you shared. THANKS!!! Fingers crossed.
PJ - You said the magic words: "backward compatible"! Only thing I'm worried about is seems like the extensions are different: 16 - mine use .v2i and your image showing .iv2i. Sounds like you were able to actually test - am I right?
Thing is - I need to reset my harddrive due to OS errors. If I can't read the 16 .v2i files I have backed up on an external drive with 21...then I lose all my data as I can't download 16 anymore.
Put another way - was there a way you were actually able to test the 16 files (.v2i) being read by 21. Since I can't download 16 anymore, after I reset my drive and all the aps are erased, if I can't use 21 to read the 16 files all my data will be unaccessibe. I'm a researcher, so it's critical.
I've been a happy 16 user for years, and will gladly pay for 21! I'm just stuck in a kind of canyon between the two versions now.
Finally, when I see how hard you each work to offer help to so many people, I feel impressed - and grateful. Thank you, Marianne and PJ.

To put your mind at rest and also to double check what I am perhaps taking for granted, let me run some tests myself using VSR v16 which I'll then upgrade to v21 and check everything works ok (I've been meaning to try this test for a while anyway)
Give me a few days and I'll come back to you with an update of my experiences next week.

Ah! Bless you, mate. Really appreciate that!
