Is VProTray.exe necessary for SSR 2013 to operate?

VProTray.exe runs in the background and slows performance. Is it a necessary program to operate SSR 2013 effectively? If not, how do I disable it?

No, it is simply the tray icon. Backups will occur without it running in the background. You can turn it off by opening SSR console, clicking VIEW > Options. Select TRAY ICON on the left, and set it to your preference.
