My client, for whom I installed this product last year, has received a Symantec letter stating that the Maintenance Contract is due to expire and offering options for renewal.
Notwithstanding that the original maintenance contract (provided as part of the purchase price) still has 4 months to run, it is my understanding that a maintenance contract is not required for the product to carry-on functioning as normal and with no time limit.
Could somebody please confirm that this is correct.

You are correct that maintenance is not required for the product to keep working - you only need the license for that.
