Problems with Granular Restore Option

Hello, We tried hard to put BESR 2010 Working but without success. We always have problems with Granular Restore Option: * All the backups seem to work well; * In the same job we backup all the server logical drives (C:, E: and F:). * The C: has the Exchange binaries. The E: has the Exchange data. The F: has the Exchange logs. * The "Backup Information" exists and also the EIF file; * Every time we try to restore the Exchange data with the Granular Restore Option, all the 3 logical drives are mounted in Windows Explorer, but we always receive the error "unable to find the exchange information file (EIF)" * In Windows Explorer we can browse the mounted drives; * Also with the Granular Restore Option, every time we try to browse one drive in the "File and Folders" tab, that drive is mounted again in Windows Explorer but we receive the error message "Unable to Mount Any of the request recovery points" * When we close BESR, all mounted drives remain in Windows Explorer. If we right click in those drives and select the option "Dismount Recovery Point" we receive an error. So is only possible for us to dismount all the units if we restart the server. This happen in one Windows 2008 R2 Server with Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2007 installed. Is one Windows English, however the console language of BESR appears in Portuguese. The backup destination is in another server. The same problems appear if we try to do the restore from the other server (where we also installed BESR). This server is one Windows 2003 English. So, what to do to solve these problems?. We are evaluating BESR and till now the things are not working... Thanks and Best Regards Duarte S.

First thing I would suggest (if not done already) is to install SP1 for 2010. You can get this via LiveUpdate or install it manually (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/347749.htm). This will require a reboot.

Once installed, the product version will show as 9.0.1 (in Help/About).

You'll then need to take a new backup and attempt a restore using GRO.

There is a similar issue currently under investigation: http://support.veritas.com/docs/346438.

However, you mentioned that the 'Backup Information' folder is being generated so you may have a different issue even though you see the same error.

At this point, I think you need to contact Technical Support.

Hi Chris, that's sounds promising, however, as Trial user, can we still call Symantec Support ?

cmiiw, the BESR 2010 GRT restore is file level restore only for whatever inside the backup image ? or does it supports exchange server email item restore ?

Albert,

You need a support contract before you can contact Tech Support. It is possible to purchase 'one-off' incidents that allow you to open a single case (for a single issue).

GRO (Granular Restore Option) allows you to restore individual Exchange items (mail, folders etc):

http://www.symantec.com/business/products/newfeatures.jsp?pcid=pcat_business_cont&pvid=1602_1

Granular Restore Option – now included with the core product at no additional cost

Restore granular items such as Exchange email, SharePoint documents or files and folders in seconds from a single interface.
  • Saves on backup time and storage consumption
  • Recover Exchange mailboxes, folders, or individual messages with any associated attachments – without requiring full mailbox backups

thanks Chris for your reply.

I didn't know before if BESR 8 up to BESR 2010 can do such thing ? is there anything that must be installed first to perform the GRO restore ?

Albert; you just need Outlook 2003/2007 installed in order to restore Exchange items with GRO. For SharePoint, there is nothing extra needed.

Thanks Chris,

I'll try to install the Outlook 2007 MAP CDO components first before installing Microsoft Office suite inside my Exchange Server.
