RAID Drivers - What If You Have No Floppy?

Luckily the server I had to restore had one. However, many of the new servers do not have floppy drives. During the boot of the SBESR CD I press (because this is a Dell and the drivers are not on the CD) and it says to insert the disk into drive A:.

What if there is no drive A:?

You can try Symantec Technical Support - 08706066000 and ask then to make you an iso that includes the drivers you require. You will have to send them the drivers.

I'll search for "08706066000" because I don't know what that means.

Thank you very much.

I searched on their techsupport site and must have asked the right question this time. I got the following that tells how to do this. Basically you need a USB floppy drive which makes sense - duh - don't know why I didn't think of that. Here's the document from their website:

How to load SCSI drivers for the recovery environment

Situation:
While booted to the recovery environment, you cannot access certain SCSI or SATA devices.

Solution:You may need to load drivers for the storage device where your backups are saved as part of booting to the recovery environment.

To access the local drive
Boot your computer using the Symantec LiveState Recovery CD or the Symantec Recovery Disk CD.
When you see the prompt "Press any key to boot from CD" immediately press .
If you press a different key, you will not have an opportunity to load special drivers.
By pressing F6, you can add storage drivers for most SCSI devices listed at: www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: For all new servers that do not ship with floppy drives a USB floppy drive will be needed to add the storage controller drivers when booting to the recovery CD.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Press when prompted to specify additional SCSI or SATA adapters, CD drives, or special controllers for use with Windows, including those for which you have a device support disk from a mass storage device manufacturer.

If you do not have the drivers available from the device manufacturer and they are not included as part of the recovery environment, you will not be able to use that drive.

For a list of storage devices and NIC drivers that are supported by the recovery environment, please see the file DRIVER_LIST.PDF, also available on the product CD.

I also found info to request they make a custom recovery cd. Here's the doc:

How to obtain a Custom Symantec Recovery Disk

Situation:
You are attempting to start a computer with the Symantec Recovery disk. The boot process either stops responding at the "Please Wait" screen, or generates a blue screen error.

Solution:
This behavior generally occurs when the Symantec Recovery Disk does not contain the correct drivers for your storage controller. To resolve the problem, Symantec is able to generate custom Recovery Disk CDs with the proper driver set for your environment.

To generate a request for a custom Recovery Disk
Gather the following information :

Required System Information

Open the start menu, click on All Programs.
Click on Accessories, then System Tools.
Click on System Information. The System Information window will open.
Click once on System Summary, in the left pane of the window.
Click on File>Save as an .nfo file, and save the file to your desktop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: In Windows 2000 use Action>Save. Do not choose Export.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Driver package for storage controller
The driver package consists of a folder containing a txtsetup.oem file, and a matching pair of .inf and .sys files. This folder will normally be found on a CD that came with the motherboard or computer. Any other files contained in this folder should be included as well. If you can not locate this driver package, include the make and model of the computer or motherboard and Symantec may be able to acquire the driver package directly from the manufacturer.

If you are uncertain you have the correct driver package, you can test it by copying the driver folder to a removable disk and using F6 when prompted during the Symantec Recovery Disk boot process to load them. If the Symantec Recovery Disk boots successfully, this confirms the driver package will resolve the issue and should be submitted to Symantec with your ISO request. If this process does not allow the Symantec Recovery Environment to load, then a different driver package is required.

Send these items in a password protected zip file, along with the password, to NIC_Drivers@symantec.com and a custom SRD will be created for you. Symantec will contact you and provide a login ID and password for the Symantec Support FTP site where you will be able to download the ISO image for the custom Recovery Disk. This ISO can then be used to create the physical Recovery Disk.
