Recovering 2008 r2 RC to a new hardware results in "sysprep cannot run on a computer that has been upgraded to a new version of windows."

Hi

We recovered a DC to dissimiliar hardware.  All went copy book until the last reboot where setup enters the "setting up for first use".  Process then stops at login screen with "Invalid Password".  Upon entering correct password, we get "Sysprep cannot run on a computer that has been upgraded to a new version of windows"

This sequence now happens everytime the server is rebooted.  (Though otherwise the server seems to be fine).

Obviously this is not an upgrade, original machine was not an upgrade and no evidence of hklm\...\setup\upgrade.

Sysprep flags are ...

  • SysprepStatus\CleanupState - 2
  • SysprepStatus\GeneralisatinState - 7
  • ChildCompletion\Setup.exe - 3
  • ChildCompletion\SetUpFInaltasks - 3

At this point it is too late to re-perform the recovery and a new image/reload will probably capture the invalid sysprep state.

I'm happy (otherwise) with the state of the server - any ideas on how to avoid the sysprep running each boot?

I guess advice on how to avoid this in the future is probably worth having as well.

Many thanks

Have you tried holding shift+ctrl keys when selecting the Restore AnyWare box and playing around with the options available ?
