SSR 2013 R2

We currently use Altiris for our imaging and server managment and in the past we were told that in order to centrally manage all Windows and Linux Servers in our environment we will have to install the SSR 2013 R2 as part of Altiris SIM, I was wondering if this can be done outside of Altiris, i.e install SSR 2013 R2 Managment Solution on a dedicated server and manage both Windows and Linux servers as you would manage them through the Altiris SIM.

What are the future directions for SSR 2013 since Veritas already has their native backup and restore product called Netbackup.

No, Symantec Management Platform (formerly Altiris) is still a requirement - http://www.veritas.com/docs/000081529
