Setting the NIC speed/duplex

Hi,

I've created a custom BESR boot CD for my ProLiant servers and have included all the drivers I think I'm going to need. When I boot from the CD everything looks good and I am able to set a static IP address and ping other servers on the network. I am also able to ping the server where my backup images are stored .However, when I try to map a network drive, I get a message "The specified network name is no longer available". When I try to map a drive from the command line using "net use" is get the same message.

I suspect that there may be a problem with speed/duplex settings on my nic but when I click on "Set Network Card Speed" the dialog box briefly flashes on the screen and then disappears immediately.

Hi,

I managed to track down the problem. It was actually the server where my backup files are stored that was the problem. So even though the driver validation fails, the Broadcom BCM5708C driver will work in this case. The problem with not being able to set the NIC speed was a red herring in this case but is a known issue with this model of NIC and is described in these documents:

Neil,

Can you give us some details about the hardware you are using (ProLiant model and generation, NIC card etc). Also, what version/build of the SRD are you using? Finally, what's the EXACT error you see when trying net use?

Yes, it's me again!

I have tried this custom  boot disk on a Vmware virtual machine and it doesn't have the same problem so I'm thinking it may be a problem with the boot disk choosing the wrong driver. The server is a Proiant DL360 G5 and the NICs are the embedded NC373i which are based on the Broadcom NetXtreme II (I think). I will be onsite tomorrow again when I should be able to give you more information.

Neil.

When I boot up using my custom SRD the NIC is detected as "Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II Monolithic Driver".

The Driver Validation tool tells me I am missing drivers for the following:

HP NC373i Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter
HP Net work Teaming Virtual Miniport Driver

I have downloaded Windows 2008 32bit drivers for both of these and have created a custom SRD using these additional drivers but I still have the same problems, perhaps because the Custom SRD creation tool sees the additional driver as HP NC370i, not HP NC373i. However, this is a generic driver designed for a wide range of HP NICs.
