Symantec System Recovery 2011 does not recognize usb external hard drive

Hello,

I have two issues that need to be solved:

  1. When selecting a source drive for backup, Symantec System Recovery (SSR) 2011 does not recognize my usb external hard drive disk (4TB, Western Digital).
  2. In SSR, what are the steps in order to copy a backup image from external HDD (F:\) to another external HDD (G:\). Drives (F and G) are used as examples.

****

I have been searching online for two hours prior to posting. I have tried a few solutions.

  • http://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/cannot-see-drives-system-recovery-2013  Some users have proposed shrinking the disk partition on the external HDD by 15GB. It did not work for me.
  • http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/moving-backup-bkf-files Apparently the solution works, but the answers are too theoretical.
  • http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/how-rotate-external-harddisks I only want to transfer selected backup files — not to copy the entire drive (F:\) to (G:\)

****

Thank you for assisting me.

Best,

Donglin

1. You will need to upgrade to SSR 2013 R2 as I suspect your 4TB drive is native 4k sector. Refer to the following for more details: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH143704

2. Go to Tools -- Manage Backup Destination -- you should then see an option to copy your recovery points

Hello Chris,

Thank you for your answer and fast reply.

  1. Indeed, my 4TB is a native 4k sector. However, there must be a way to overcome the upgrade from SSR 2011 to SSR13 R2... $$$
  2. I got to there and didn't know what to do afterwards. My source path is secured, I could only select my destination path, which doesn't make sense...

Regards,

  1. 2013 R2 is the only version that supports native 4k drives as a backup source. You may want to contact our customer care team to see if you are entitled to a free upgrade or not.
  2. Not sure what you mean. Just select the recovery points you want to copy, click on 'copy', then follow the wizard ...

Thanks Chris. I have reported to my manager for issue 1. We will look for an answer internally.
