We have several Symanatec System Recovery installations and would like an easy way of monitoring the status of backups. We have seen that there is a "SNMP-Trap" option in SSR - we would appreciate any tips on how this can be setup/configured in order to monitor our backup status.
Many thanks.

Have a look at those:

Page 155 of the Users Guide http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC3911
And if you use a SSR MS you can configure the policies from there.

Thanks Markus for your feedback.
I found these options in SSR and enabled them. However, how do I go about reading them? What apps do I need to install in order to have a status overview of my backups, which are being sent via snmp traps? SSR MS = Symantec System Recovery Management Solution - right?

OK, now i understand- you can use http://www.trapreceiver.com/trapreceivermanual.html for SNMP Walking.

Sorry, but I don't really understand. I have no idea if SSR is actually sending SNMP traps to the local server? I have installed Windows SNMP services on the same server where one of the SSRs is installed. The "SNMP-Trap" & "SNMP-Service" services are running. For the "SNMP-Service" I created a community name "test" with a trap destination of "localhost" (along with the ip of the server). Under security, I created a communityname of "test" with read/write rights. I enabled that SNMP-Packets can be received from all hosts.
When I use trapreceiver to 'walk' (scan available standard interface) on port 161 on my local server - then I see lots of infos. However, nothing regarding SSR or BESR. I thought that the trap is sent to port 162 - how can I test if something is received from SSR?
Thanks for the SNMP lesson!

The command "snmputil.exe trap" listens for traps... when I restart the SNMP-Service, then messages are received (see here). Howeve,r when I restart the "Backup Exec System Recovery" service, then nothing happens. I am doing something wrong here?

Hm, let me raise this to support for you.

Are the SNMP settings still there in the UI?
If not, could be related to this: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH159819.
What version are you using (check in Help/About)?

Great thanks - will Symantec get directly in touch with me?

See Chris post above !

@ Chris - don't know what you mean about my SNMP settings? Under Tasks, Options, SNMP-Trap, I have ticked all checkboxes for all messages and tried both SNMP Versions 1 & 2. My SMTP-E-Mail settings are OK.
We are using SSR 2010 (9.0.0.35656).

I was just asking if SNMP was enabled or not. Sounds like it is.
I would recommend that you update to 10.0.3 (SP3) - reboot is required. Please confirm the results using this version.

Sorry, not sure which SP to install. Your first link sent me to "Service Pack 5 (9.0.5) for Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) 2010". Now you mention SP3? Which should I install - if SP3, then link please.
Thanks again
P.S. I found this for SP3, but it mentions Service Pack 3 (9.0.3) not "10.0.3" which you mention.
10-02-2012 08:17 AM
Sorry, my mistake. You need to go for 9.0.5 as I see you are using BESR 2010.
You can use LiveUpdate to get the latest service pack or install it manually.

Thanks Chris. I have manually updated to 9.0.5.45729 - no reboot was required.
What now... how can I test if SSR is sending SNMP traps?
10-02-2012 08:41 AM
A reboot is required, even if did not prompt you.
I would suggest using Wireshark which should show if the traps are being sent or not.

OK will do. Once we get SNMP up and running, what would you suggest we use in order to then get a nice summary of the status of all our SSR backups?
10-03-2012 01:59 AM
How many machines are being backed up with SSR?
10-04-2012 12:33 AM
From all the networks that we manage, we probably need to check the SSR backup status of around 20 systems.

You might want to consider using the SSR Management Solution for this. It's really designed for bigger environments. If you are looking to add to your existing 20 systems, it would make sense and it's free.
