Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: ASR writer Error 0x80042404.

Peter_Apicella
Level 2

I am running Win2008 Server and just purchased BESR 8.5 (8.5.0.28843) for my standalone workstation (intel S5000PSL) with SAS RAID. I am trying to backup to an internal SATA drive.

Whenever I start the backup, it hangs at 5% without error (for more than a day).

1) The Administrator Event Log lists this error: Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: ASR writer Error 0x80042404.  hr = 0x00000000.

2) vssadmin list providers (after rebooting):

   Provider name: 'Symantec Software VSS Provider'
     Provider type: Software
     Provider Id: {262b716e-bb23-41b5-aaef-e2c15e767167}
     Version: 1.0

   Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
     Provider type: System
     Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
     Version: 1.0.0.7

3) Disk Management shows Drive C: Healthy (system, boot, page file, active, crash dump, primary partition)

4) I can do a shadow copy on drive C: automatically or manually.

5) Your backup program hangs, and a reboot is required to do any VSS things.

Help would be appreciated.

Reviewing a case having this error, shows a combination of dynamic drive related issues (check disk management status on your drives), COM+ errors, and VSS writer related errors all beyond the scope of what BESR can endure. I would stop, uninstall BESR, and see if NTBACKUPish, ‘Windows Server Backup,’ for 2008 is able to successfully backup this system, System State, and Shadow copy components. If it can successfully backup all drives on this internal SATA drive, without issue, leaving the state of the VSS writers correctly I suspect you will need to open a ticket and see if this is a defect issue.

due to how rare this is, are there anyone else in the forums community having this error?

I'm having the same issue with Ghost 14.

Search for "5%"  as teh backup process gets to 5% then hangs.

Its not as rare as you might think.

There was a problem which took a while to resolve, but Symantec Technical Support was able to resolve the issue and my backup now works correctly. You wish to contact them.

Hanging at 5% is indeed a common occurrence; this specific reason behind why it is hanging is the unique part.
Be sure that all unallocated space on any volumes (except for that little portion at the end of a drive) is allocated and formatted, and that CHKDSK on the volumes BESR is to backup comes back clean.
A solution that seems to have worked is to uninstall and reinstall the VSS provider BESR uses.
Please follow the steps outline in the following technote using the -unregister option first, to remove the Symantec VSS provider. Be sure the VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS shows that it has been removed along with its entry in COM+ applications and it service in windows services before reinstalling. Look for the Providerinstall.log file for details if it was successfully uninstall and reinstalled. Once reinstalled try the backup again.
