Fixed by creating a dynamically-sized vhd set to an intitial size large enough to contain the restore then doing a normal restore to the vhd. Then made vm bootable by setting the partition active with diskpart, then doing a bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /rebuildbcd, followed by X:\sources\recovery> startrep.exe. Then loading the system hive, setting the intelide service start value to 0, and setting the old raid service startup value to 3.
