Tiering your Cloud Data (and lowering costs) with NetBackup 10

Today’s cloud providers know that availability and resilience are key concerns organizations have when making decisions about migrating their data to the cloud.  But these same cloud providers have also embraced a “shared responsibility” model – which means that while they are responsible for the infrastructure, the data is the customer's responsibility.

And cloud snapshots are a powerful tool in ensuring the protection of that data. They provide a great option for fast recovery – with rollback restores, and the ability to restore to alternate virtual machines.  However, snapshots can use a lot of cloud capacity – which means that using snapshots for long-term retention can become extremely cost-prohibitive.

Cheaper Data in the Cloud
By deduplicating and compressing data, and then storing it on a cheaper storage tier, organizations can achieve storage savings up to 99% compared to snapshots.  These tremendous savings are achieved by combining the reduced footprint of deduplication with the lower cost of “archive tier” cloud storage.

For more details on the math behind these savings, see our NetBackup 10 Cloud-Optimized Backup Technical Brief.

Storage Lifecycle Management
Another NetBackup feature that optimizes the use of cloud resources is Storage Lifecycle management.

Storage Lifecycle management isn’t new to NetBackup; it’s been around for years.  But when using this approach in the cloud and combining it with NetBackup’s support for multiple cloud storage tiers, it’s another way that NetBackup makes the management of your cloud data easier – and less costly – by automating the process of what data to keep, and what data to expire, based on criteria that you define.

For more details on our Storage Lifecycle management capabilities, see the following discussion post.

With these capabilities now available on both AWS and Azure in NetBackup 10, backup administrators can retain all the flexibility of NetBackup while optimizing cloud costs.  Using NetBackup in the cloud really does make sense and dollars!
