I've managed to resolve this one - as suspected, it was a permissions issue. Once I utilised a domain administrator login, the backup proceeded without this error. Would be a good idea if Symantec wrote a kb article on this one!

Thanks for the suggestion - the repair resolved the issue on the upgrade instance of BUE12. As for your query re: the new install, yes - all hotfixes applied but there was no notification issue on that instance.
