We currently use the bpplclients command in quite a bit of auditing, alerting and automation scripts we've built over the years. It has served us well!

Check for a directory with 1000's of small files in it. (Oracle database server for instance, with .trn files being generated). I've run across this in our environment in the past.
Looks like Symantec just released a tech note that references the issue you're having.
