Thanks everyone, I just looked at the media status which tells me the media was multiplexed. That answers that question. The issue with the actual restore turned out to be a bad media.

Also goes to show you can't rely on information from some people. The exchange server is 2007 running on Win2003 R2. Don't know if this makes a difference. Probably not. We have had successful restores in the past.

Thank you for your comment. Our issues were resolved by upgrading to EV 9.0.4.1097. I have not experienced the issue since. I have not had to restart the services either. We only do File System Archiving at this point in time.
