For now, we have to live with the situation. The server hardware is being replaced in the near future, so I will re-check the situation as soon we are on RHEL6 and new hardware.

Sorry for replying late (was on leave during this time). We didn't find a solution so far w/o restarting Netbackup which I was trying to avoid. The solution for now is to switch the cluster, thus restarting Netbackup. This is kind of annoying hand...
