I have two servers on two boxes. One on a physical machine [Windows Server 2003, Enterprise, 32 Bit] and one on another box, running on VM ware 5.0 ESXi, Windows Server 2008. I currently back up these two servers using Backup Exec to a tape drive in my 2003 machine. My Windows 2003 box needs to be retired. I need help to plan the backup options for my new set up. I am hoping to consolidate two boxes in to one box by installing Win 2012, 64 bit and migrating my existing Win 2008 R2 [currently on an VM session] to a hyper V session on the new box. I have two options for backing up the base box and the new hyper V session. I have two licenses for SSR 2013, I have one BKExec 2012 and one BK Exec 2012 Windows agent. I am not sure which one I should use or should I use both for backing up my two servers. In this scenario, how do I go about getting the correct hardware and set up. Please help. [My base new Win 2012 server will be a Domain controller, Fax server, Remote Desktop Server, File Server and will have the fax board and tape drive if I am planning to use it]. We are a small office so, I guess it should be okay? The hyper V session will be a database server [Win 2008 R2, 64 bit]. Hard Ware: I was thinking of getting a new box with 8 or more hard drives. Allocate appropriate hard drives to create a RAID 1 [for Win 2012] and RAID 5 [for the databases and hyper V session] and reserve two drives for another RAID 1 for hard drive backup using SSR 2013? [The estimated capacity or allocation of hard drive space for the base server will be a Max of 300 GB, The hyper V session a max of 400 GB] Questions: 1) Am I thinking correctly for the set up?. If so is the plan for hard ware appropriate, if so how many drives will I need? 2) If appropriate how big should the RAID 1 backup hard drives should be like 1 TB or 2 TB? 3) Should I now back up using SSR 2013 [I have 2 licenses] or should I use the tape backup with BkUp Exec 2012 [I have a server license and windows agent] or can I use both since I do have the tape drive and tapes already. [ really want to be able to use the SSR since imaging will make disaster recovery easier?] Thanks for your help and advice.629Views0likes3CommentsSymantec System recovery 2013

Hi, This is my scenario: 1. i have so many customers with symantec system recovery 2011 or 2013 2. so many of my customers are experiencing that issue. the error message is the same ever: A test that safeguards the integrity of the program failed unexpectedly. PRECONDITION failed, UMResourcewin::GetLoad: .\UmResourceWin.cpp(347): mResourceHandle !=NULL 3. i've asked into forums, symantec enterprise support, i've reinstalled, deleted and recreate the jobs, defrag my partitions, chkdsk my disks, but nothing works 4. i think that can be something with vss, but i don't know! please, help me, so many of my customer have not backup, i'm responsible for that information. thanks.560Views0likes4CommentsFormer Ghost 15 user - Getting trapped in the SSR 2013 Trial
A few days ago I had an issue with doing a system restore using Ghost 15. I went to that forum for help and learned that Symantec was going to discontinue Ghost and recommended users "check out" SSR 2013 with its free trial. I downloaded the free trial and eventually learned it would not install unless I first remove Ghost. That wasn't from anything that I saw when the SSR installation failed; that happened without any additional information. However, I did eventually find my way to this forum and a helpful Guru pointed out the issue and also that I could always re-install Ghost if I wasn't happy with SSR. I uninstalled Ghost, installed SSR, and started backing stuff up. Now, if one of the things you want to do is a full system restore (my primary interest)then you need a recovery disk. SSR will make a recovery disk for you and all you need to do is provide an activation key which you don't get with the trial version. No problem, as all I need to do is install Ghost. But I can't install Ghost until I uninstall SSR. And SSR WILL NOT UNINSTALL. Whenever I try to uninstall it there's an Error 2738 and something about a VBasic error. So now I have a trial verision of a program that I can't use and a paid for program I can no longer load. I guess it can all be fixed if I pay Symantec for an activation key for a program that I'm not sure I want in the hopes it will maybe allow me to upgrade to a latter version that can uninstall so I can install the program I uninstalled so I could evaluate the Free Trial. To put it another way, I may have to pay Symantec to I can remove their free software and load back the software I paid them for as well. And, even it it turns out there's a simple, and hopefully less expensive, way out of this I've still wasted a lot of time on what should be a free trial of a comercial product which appears to be more of an alpha test. (If I sound upset, it's because I really am)2.4KViews3likes12Comments
