vCenter backup fail
I keep running into the same issue where BE2014 will error out when it reaches vCenter in the VM backup scheme. I get the following messages whether BE is backing up the whole datacenter or backing up the indivual VM. vcenter test-Backup -- The job failed with the following error: An attempt to take a snapshot of a virtual machine failed because it was unable to quiesce an application. A quiesced snapshot could not be created for the virtual machine (DC)ha-datacenter(DC)\vm\Vcenter. Is vCenter supported in BE2014?Solved7.6KViews1like10CommentsBackup Exec support for ESXi (free)
HI, we have 1 customer who has 2 VMWare ESXi 5.0 Hypervisors with the free license of VMWare. We were backing up these ESXi 5.0 machines with Symantec back-up Exec 2010 R3 which worked fine. We could back-up the machines and granulary restore files from these back-ups. We even had Symantec Support work on a case where the back-ups were failing due to misconfiguration. Recently we have upgraded 1 of these 2 ESXi hosts to VMWare ESXi 5.5 u1 and the back-ups started failing. We were advised to upgrade to Backup Exec 2012 and we did. After we upgraded to Backup Exec 2012 we were still getting the same errors for this particular host. The VMs from the ESXi 5.0 host were backing up without any issues. We then found out that in order for back-up Exec 2012 to be able to back-up ESXi 5.5 u1 we would need a VMWare standard license because Backup Exec 2012 uses the Vstorage API. if we were to downgrade the ESXi (free) 5.5 u1 host to ESXi (free) 5.1 u3, would we be able to back-up the VMs on this host again with Back-up Exec 2012 VMWare integration?5.8KViews0likes9CommentsBackup Exec 2012 compatibility with Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2
Hi, We have a bunch of servers running Windows Server 2008 R2, one of which is our BE 2012 SP4media server. We also have several Windows Server 2012, one running as aDC ie AD/DHCP/DNSand another running Exchange Server 2010 SP3. And we also have a bunch of Windows Server 2012 R2 running as SQL servers and various other applications,Microsoft Business Dynamicsetc Currently we have the BE 2012 SP4 backing up all of them onto Ultrium tape and it seems to be working OK regards targetting the servers and backing them up via agents. I am aware though that BE 2012 SP4 doesn't support Windows Server 2012 R2. Where am I going to come unstuck regards wanting to do recovery of these servers ? Will I be able to do a bare metal restore for the Windows Server 2012 DC and Exchange Server from the BE 2012 SP4 server ? Can I do anything other than flat file restore via the agents on the Windows Server 2012 R2 boxes ? Seems that Symantec seem to have been in the wilderness this last year or so regards Windows Server 2012 R2 ? I see that there is now BE 2014 and also that there is now a BE 15 just released. Am I really going to need to upgrade to these products if I want to do full server recovery for all of my servers ? Mike.Solved5.2KViews0likes2CommentsCan't backup system state
Ok, next question... One of our servers, that happens to be a backup domain controller, we're using to run test backupswith thetrial version of 2010. The system logon account (which is same as system account right now)being used to backup this dc is a member of the domain admin group which in turn is a member of the administrators group. We have even tried with another domain admin account and get same results. Have followed the error link and tried solutions but no luck... ...andwe keep getting following errors on the test jobs: Error category : Security Errors Error : e000fe7d - Access is denied. To back up or restore System State, administrator privileges are required. For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65149 We have also turned on AOFO (thanks pkh). After the delay for support for BE 2010 and 'Snow Leopard' does anyone know where we stand for support for Lion. We are purchasing a new Mac Server in August and I am sure that it will ship with Lion and I would like to know if BE 2010 R3 Mac Agent will support it. BE 2010 R3 is running on 2008 SP2. Any one know? ThanksSolved3.9KViews0likes4CommentsBackup Exec 2012 Offlining HP Tape Drive Randomly
Hi All. First post here and I am really, really hoping for some help. I am working on an environment that appears to have the fairly common problem of Backup Exec offlining an HP Autoloader at seemingly random times. Now, three weeks ago another tech fixed this issue by disabling 4 recommended HP services and it worked fine. The other night, the issue re-appeared despite nothing having changed - wierd. Here is the setup: Server 2K8R2 BE 2012 SP1 HP Ultrium1760 DRV tape device HP 1/8 G2 Autoloader HP P212 SaS controller Here is the (compehensive) list of things I / we have tried to no avail: 1 - Replaced all hardware at a very early stage of the problem (has been ongoing for months now) 2 - Ensured Backup Exec's own drivers are being used for the device 3 - Set DB Maintenance to run way outside of the backup routine 4 - Un-installed and re-installed tape drive + autoloader 5 - Disable HP services as recommended by Symantec 6 - Attempt to backup to disk - this works 7 - Opened 3 seperate cases with Symantec, none of which fully resolved the issue as it re-occured 8 - Checked the ADAMM.log file and found this error just before the device offlined: [4608] 08/02/12 01:15:04.389 DeviceIo: 04:07:00:00 - Device error 1167 on "\\.\Tape0", SCSI cmd 4d, 1 total errors [4608] 08/02/12 01:15:13.063 PvlDrive::DisableAccess() - ReserveDevice failed, offline device Drive = 1033 "Tape drive 0001" ERROR = 0x0000001F (ERROR_GEN_FAILURE) 9 - Tried running SGMON with Verbose devices and media logging enabled - this didnt go well. The device didnt error but none of the backup jobs completed. The only thing I think we havent tried is running tracer.exe after seeing the device go offline. I read in Symantecs documentation that they don't support SaS controllers with RAID enabled, the P212 is one of those controllers. However, in the same document there was a list of tested controllers and the P212 is on that list, so I'd be a little cheesed if Symantec said it was a compatibility problem despite having a document that says it should work. Ive also checked all the usuale places (event log, BE job / device logs etc) for more info and there really isnt much to go on. HP's testing tools always come back with passes when run, Im 99% sure that this isnt a hardware issue but have nowhere left to go with it. Could someone please help me out? P.S. just as an FYI - this Backup Exec instance came from an upgrade of 2010, it wasnt a brand new install.. Don't know if that matters. Thanks in advance, MattSolved3.8KViews1like31CommentsBest solution to back up Citrix Xen Server
Hello, I am wondering what the best solution would be for the following: I have on Citrix Xen Server host that has 7 virtual machines on it. I am currently using PHD Virtual to back this up to a NAS. I am looking to move to different software for the backups. One of the virtual machines is running SQL and one is running AD and DNS. There is also one physical server that has AD, DNS, and DHCP on it that i would also like to back up in the same solution. What i was curious about is what is the best way to back all of this up? Is it Back Up Exec or System Restore? Or would neither work? I am looking for something that will back up to the existng NAS and allow for item level restores as well as fast restores of full VM's if ever needed. Second question is, assuming one of the two products will work is it best practice to install it on its own server or could it be installed on teh physical that is existing with AD, DNS and DHCP? I am assuming its own server and that is what i would shoot for, but for the sake of saving money i like to know my options. Thank you for your assistance.Solved3.5KViews0likes4CommentsHelp with warning "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued."
Hi, We have BE2010 running in a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM, and the HP tape library is attached to the physical ESX host, and mapped in VIClient to the 2008 R2 VM. We've been running backups for months with no problems. However, recently, near the system log says this a few times, always about 5:30am when the backup job is completing: -- Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued. -- I've been researching as this appears to be disk/array related, however, none of my other VMs on this host are throwing this error. As a test, I paused my backup schedule and ran the backup job in the middle of the day instead, and again this \Device\RaidPort0 reset happened, so the error indeed appears linked to the backup job itself. Anybody had any experience with this and/or know if this is cause for alarm? Like I said, the backup jobs are completing, but the client and I are nervous that this shouldn't be ignored. Thanks, BrianSolved3.5KViews1like3CommentsEmail notification for only failed job
