New Symantec Desktop & Laptop. NEW?!!
Version 7 is just a value. I've recently had the chance to test the "new" Symantec Desktop and Laptop, formerly the well known product named D&L...Option. Really there's nothing new and the product is only available as separate software and it has mantained the same old graphic style (since 2004 when it was linked to NBU 5.x). After all when it was linked as option to BE something new in aspect of icons and menus was changed! Now the engine/console is available for Windows 64bit paltform too but I've measured no improvements in 64bit services versus the traditional 32 bit ones. After all the database repository of D&L is the same: on a SQL Express instance locally setup together with the server/console or on an external SQL 2005/2008. Some improvement has been made on PST backup with a real "delta" incremental transfer of only the changed part of the PST but this requires the presence of the local desktop area of the DLO backed up files. Do not forget that this product can "ideologically" conflict with Enterprise Vault that would remove the PST (or NSF too) from desktop at all ;-) Technologically there's nothing new...again! The "engine" is the same version 3 of the formerly NBU 6.x/BE 2010 option and the things it can do are basically the same. After all nothing is changed on the users' desktop to justify new features and locally saved data (including PST) are the same! Same policies, some user profiling and so on. Simple question: I can understand the installation of LiveUpdate software in the console server but why the setup push LiveUpdate on the client too? This can cause issues. Some really negative note: . browsing of PC is always done using Netbios (no W7 client detected) . DLO agent on client is always started using the Programs/Startup folder and not a service linked on registry of the current user .I've got several issue pushing the agent on client with several errors (the vxpush is the same old one...) while when pushed using the BE2010 console there were no issues forcing me to manually install or to use a GPO . .the error code are the same old one V-xxx-yyyy from Veritas paleolithic era ;-) and, worst, most of the Internet link to the current support site are broken with no result!!! .automatic user assignment using AD or LDAP does not work on 64bit version!1.3KViews5likes3CommentsNetbackup Solaris Media Server to 5230 Appliance Migration

Good afternoon, I would need to confirm if I can perform the following migration, and hardware catalog, with the following characteristics: Current platform: Sparc V440, Solaris 9, NBU 5.1 (master / media) STK L180 robotic library with IBM LTO2 FC drives New Platform: T4-2 Sparc, Solaris 10, NBU 7.x (master / media), I will be 7.5 SL3000 robotic library with IBM drives LTO5 / LTO4 FC LTO4 drives would use to restore old LTO2 tapes. The LTO5 for new backups. Finally, compatibility of agents and clients NBU between these versions My first concern is about the viability of the migration of the catalog and activation of licenses. Another important point is the migration and redesign of existing backup policies, any recommendation? The second on the operation of LTO4 drives for LTO2 restores, which according to manual is viable, but would need to know if they have specific experience in this. thank you very much regardsSolved1.4KViews4likes8CommentsSymantec Netbackup 7 licensing
Hi All, I'd like to know if I'm getting this correctly. I'm planning to getNetbackup 7 Starter Editionaccording tob-symc_netbackup_7_core_DS_12995286-2.en-us.pdf(http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/fact_sheets/b-symc_netbackup_7_core_DS_12995286-2.en-us.pdf)Table 2. the Edition comparison the Starter Edition can have 5 Server (supported clients) does this means i can have the following backup items: 1x ESXi 4 server (using vStorage API for inline deduplication - Change Block Tracking) 1x Solaris SPARC + Oracle DB 10gR2 1x Linux 1x Windows Server + Share Point 2007 (Granular restore) 1x Windows Server + Exchange Server 2007(Granular restore) all of the above with bare metal restore capability. Since it is said that i could have: Server Clients, Tape Drive and Database Agents included ? yes I understand that Deduplication is not included here since it will need another license to spend. I'm getting confused here of which product that i should get :-| Would be good if anyone can clarify this please ?Solved1.2KViews4likes6CommentsNetbackup upgradation to 7.7

I get more frustrated everyday! When I call Symantec support and ask for a simple solution....I am always told to "run this cmd". Netbackup is suppossed to be the industry leader in backup software....so I am told. My company has spent over $500K on the netbackup software.....I can just imagine how much other compaines have spent. Here is 1 small example..... We are planning on moving our datacenter around and need to move alot of servers from this rack to that rack. Some of the servers include the netbackup servers(master & medias). Due to synthetic backups and MSDP(kudos for that)...all backups are done but the duplications to tape are still running. I have 10 duplications pending to run and they will not finish by the time we need to bring down the servers. WHY can I not just right click and hold or suspend these duplications? I am sure it would not take to much to program that into the the gui. NO I have to run some cmd that takes me 30 minutes to gather all of the information I need. Then another 30 minutes to write the cmd to release the duplications. I am sure I could come up with atleast 5 examples of where GUI improvements would make everyone's life's better. I understand that in 7.6 there are suppossed to be ALOT of improvements in SLP's and what can be done. I have been asking for these "improvements" for 3yrs now. Like I said...my company has spent ALOT of money to purchase....and for support for this product. You would think it would not take too much to program in these improvements. Maybe if more of us let Symantec know how we feel....they might do something!617Views3likes2CommentsNeed a Script to get NBU Clients OS Version information using bpgetconfig
