Deduplication folder stays offline
Forum, We upgraded Backup Exec from 2010-R3 to 2012-SP1. We have the dedupe option for both versions. The upgrade was done two weeks ago and we have been running dedupe jobs successfully. Now the deduplication folder will not come online. We have about 10TB of backups extending back 6 months. Under “Storage” this message is displayed next to the dedupe folder: This device has not been discovered correctly. Cycle the services on _CoSRV-BEX to retry device discovery. This alert is also logged: Backup Exec was unable to initialize and communicate with the device [SYMANTECOstLdr MACF] (The handle is invalid.). Click the link below for more information on how to diagnose the problem. http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=answers&startover=y&question_box=V-275-1017 note the above link is for 2010, not 2012. Actions taken: Using the BE Services mgr, the services were recycled (many times) – no improvement. The server was rebooted – no improvement. Using the BE Services mgr, the services (including the dedupe services) were recycled – no improvement. The server and drive array were powered off and powered back on. All is normal. We did recycle the services with and without the dedupe services after this power up - no improvement. FYI We have a Dell PowerEdge R710 and an MD1200 array for the local D: drive, which has the dedup folder and nothing else. The server runs Win Server 2008R2 and has 64GB RAM. There are no hardware errors. The physical array is normal and drive D can be browsed. Live Update shows we are up-to-date. Some google searches suggest solutions for 2010, not 2012 . . . that the solution is to remove the target servers from the devices window, and disable client side dedupe. How can that be done in 2012? I have opened a support ticket with Symantec, but I cannot get them to call me back. Symantec advises that they will have the Deduplication support team call me back. I was promised a call back 3 ½ hours ago, but that hasn’t happened. I have called back twice with the ticket number and been shunted over to the voice mail of engineer that owns the ticket. Is there any hope for this? Should I look for a replacement to Backup Exec? ... Frustrated and hoping we don't have to restore anything.Solved4.2KViews25likes2CommentsBackup Exec 2012 Has Issues
To help someone who may be thinking about upgrading to Backup Exec 2012, be careful. Backup Exec 2012, while it does have a very nice user interface and much better view of the backup jobs, it has some major issues that are not yet resolved. We did an upgrade over a week ago and we still can not compete our backups. The issues today are: -- The upgrade got us into a look over the "deduplication" feature and needed to call support for a answer (we have placed the solution on the forum) -- The reports are not working at all. It appears it is using the old reports or is just broken. So no reports on media, or jobs, etc. -- We have run out of backup space and there is NO way to manage the "media". You can see media sets but you are unable to sort or figure out which ones you can delete. (other thanjust reading though theunordered list) NOTE: We can not run a report to view the media which was suggested as a work around. -- There is no way to change the "retention" date of a "media set". So we wanted to reduce the retention period for existing backups so the space on the backup to disk folder will be reclaimed. Well since there is no concept of a "media set" in this version, you can only change the date for future backups. -- It keeps doing "discovery" on computers we have already noted as not needed to be backed up. Discovery runs on its own and adds machines that it finds. Even if we delete the machine, the next time discovery runs we are deleting it again from the list. We need to run discovery but once we make a decision on the machine, it should stop showing up. We are committed to Backup Exec 2012 but are really in a bad way with the product right now. So if you thinking of an upgrade, it might be better to delete you old version and start from scratch. Or wait. Hopefully this will prevent another user from going through this nighmare.1.5KViews6likes10CommentsTape set confusion ...
Good morning, I've some logical problem with BE 2010 R3: We use a Quantum i40 tape library with two magazines to backup our SAN. To organize the tapes we use the left magazine for the daily tape set (allways in the library) and the right one for the weekly tape set (changed every monday). So I've configured two jobs and two Tape sets in BE 2010 R3, one for the left with 5-day overwrite protection, one for the right with always overwrite. Everything is full functional, but sometimes BE seems to be "intelligent" and uses some tapes from the wrong tape set, one example from this weekend: The weekend job is configured to use the "right" weekly tape set / magazine. There are a few temporaly tapes and enough over writeable in the right magazine available - but it use one over writeable tape from the "left" daily magazine. Why? Every Job is configured to use one static magazine / tape set, why is BE changing this and re-join the tapes to different sets? Many thanks. I started seeing LiveUpdate Information About the agent for windows on at least one server does not have the most recent updates? To Install the most recent updates, on the Backup and restore tab, right click the remote computer that is out of date, and then select Update. 1.There is no indication on what server agent is out of date 2.After right clicking on each server on some I can see Update is grayed out and on some its clickable 3.Does this mean they are out of date and need to be updated? 4.What happen if I update the server will I have to reboot? 5.The server is Windows 2003 with exchange 2003 running on a cluster serves with 2 nodes 6.It seem each node might need the upgrade and the cluster seems to need 7.I am assuming after I update the active node the cluster will be up-to-date 8.Should I manually run LiveUpdate on the backup Exec server monthly and after an update I should update the clients?1.2KViews5likes18CommentsBackup Exec 2012 Compatibility

Currently we use veeam to backup our network VMs. After all is said and done it is about 2.4 TB consistently. We use backup exec to write the data to tape. The past few weeks have been the same, but every few days it requires a fifth tape. The tapes we use are 800 GB tapes. When looking at the tapes last night I noticed that the allocation date on the fifth tape was from another job done last week. As far as I knew the tapes would be over written when reused by backup exec. Is there a setting that I am missing that could be making the job grab another tape, but not write anything to it?Solved983Views4likes7Comments
