Reconfiguring Tape Library Partitions
I recently took over admin duties at a company running Backup Exec 2010 using a Dell TL4000 tape library with two drives and 44 tape slots. The previous admin is gone but left the TL4000 partitioned with5 partitions. The first two each have one slot, the next two have three each and the remaining slots (9 through 44) are in the last partition. I need to change this configuration but I'm wondering what effect the changes would have on existing jobs that use the current configuration...will they update automatically? I don't want to make any precipitous changes that could cause problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BE 2012 - After migration, storage pools but no storage devices
Migrated our BE 2012 server using the steps in the article below. We moved from a Win2K8 R2 Enterprise OS to Win2K8 R2Standard OS for licensing reasons. Everything seemed to migrate successfully except for the storage devices which are simply network drives/shares. In the BE console on the new BE server, the storage pools, that were on the old BE server, are there and the properties of the storage pools show the related storage devices. The problem is that the storage devices do not show up as individual devices on the storage tab of the BE console, so I cannot edit the properties or even use them with the migrated backup jobs. I tried renaming the old BE server and taking it offline, then renaming the new BE server to the old BE server name, but I could not log into BE using the old or new name after that. I put the new name back into place so now I'm back at square one again. I thought about just configuring new storage devices with new names but I'm concerned about how that will affect my ability to restore existing backed up data that is on these drives. Ideally, I would like to get some help on how I can get this migrated BE server to recognize the storage devices again. https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH129826.html Thank You, RA

Disk backups - automatic removal of expired files
I have a large disk storage that I do my backup to disk on then from there, backup to tape. I have an expiration date of 5 days. Question, what program does this cleanup and why does it work sometime and not other times?? Also, is there a place that you can set this program to run (specific date)? Thanks much Cathy

Succesful Duplicate Job not in Restore List
Hi all. I have BEX2012 with a full B2D job each week, where part of the job is also a duplicate to tape from the end of the month full B2D,which is sent to offsite storage. (I'm aware this mght not be a good method but not looking to address that now) Last month'sduplicate jobhadan issue with a bad tape so it failed. Using new tapes, I clicked on the successful end of monthB2D in the job history list, and ran anotherduplicate to tape from it. The duplicate finished successfully, however, when I tried a test restore to access the tape data, the duplicate backup instance was not listed. I treid to catalog the duplicate job running through all the tapes, but it is still not listed as a time point for a restore like all past duplicate tape jobs. How can I have this accessible/catalogued, etc? Tnx

Backup Exec not using disk with free space in disk pool
We are using Backup Exec 10d and have it configured to backup to disk. We created a disk pool with 2 disks in it. one 255GB disk and one 1TB disk. Backups have been running fine until this past week, where they have been failing due to the smaller disk being full. As I understand it, Backup Exec should choose the disk from the pool with space on it for the backups. Is this not true? What I have done to get the backups going is disable the disk that is full, so that the only choice Backup Exec has is to choose the disk with free space on it. Any help/advice will be appreciated.

Backup Exec 2014 duplicate backup sets without encryption?
Hi, As above really! We are backing up our servers using BE definedpassphrase (256 bit AES encryption) on our LTO5/6 drives. We are going to start supporting an external company and rather than dedicate separate media sets (And tapes)to this company what we want to do is the following: Setup their jobs to append to our tapes using our current encryption key In the extremely unlikely scenario that they want a copy of their backups I do not want to give them our tapes (Just incase they get into our data). So what I want to do is duplicate their backup sets onto an unencrypted tape. When I select a backup set and select the Duplicate option there is an option about encryption which Symantec mentions can be used to encrypt unencrypted backup sets. It also mentions that if a different encryption key is specified only unencrypted data will be encrypted with this key. So I am wondering if I select no encryption will it simply make an encrypted copy, or will it make an unencrypted copy?

tape drive dropping offline in the middle of a job
The issue we’re seeing is as follows: Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP2: We have a Tandberg Storage Library T24 with two HP LTO5 drives in it. It’s attached by fiber to the Q-Logic 8Gb FC Dual-port HBA. We have 2 backup jobs that run nightly. One goes directly to tape and the other goes to disk and then to tape. Tandberg has swapped out both tape drives and the tape library. We’ve tried different fiber cables and now we’ve swapped out the Q-Logic card. One of the tape drives drops offline in the middle of the disk-to-tape portion of the job. I am unable to find WHY it drops anywhere. I’ve verified the SCSI configuration and I do not see any problems. I’m not seeing the tell-tale Event ID 9 or 11 that would suggest a problem. If I restart BE services, I can rerun the duplicate to tape job fine, but it fails again at it's next scheduled run. I'm about to pull my hair out! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is backup over WAN worth considering?
Provided my calculation of data transfer shows that it's "doable" within 3 hours everyday. I was considering this before I was presented with Symantec BE14. Now my partner is talking about 2 BE servers with dedupe on each side and other license options that would be required, not to mention hardware, etc. It's way over original budget and I'm not sure BE is really built for this. I mean, it's one thing if I raise the budget and the solution works, but quite another if it turns out to be an expensive pile of doodoo..

Backup Exec 2015 - Agent For Windows???
Hello all - I am currently upgrading my servers (FROM:Windows 2008 R2 withBackup Exec 2010 R3,TO:Server 2012 R2 with Backup Exec 2015). I do not recall everneeding a separate - 'Agent for Windows' when I purchased my licenses Backup Exec 2010 R3. *Therefore my question is, will I now be missing functionality that I had before with 2010 R3?* Thanks in advance! :)

The device state has been set to offline because the device attached to the computer is not responding.
I have been working on this for a couple weeks and have not gotten anywhere. This occurs whenever a backup is ran. The backup will begin to run and then a few minutes later this error will occur. As well as this occuring the tape drive is ejected and I have to put the device back into the machine and manually turn the tape back online. I have looked at similar situations, but they do not seem promising in fixing this issue. How this is setup I have a virtual enviornment (ESXi)with 3 virtual servers. One virtual server is the Backup Exec Server, while the other two have the Backup Exec Agent Utility on them. Using vSphere I have added the HP H222 HBA to the Backup Exec Server. It has been running fine for months but all of a sudden it has started giving this error. The tape drive is a HP LTO Ultrium-5 The HBA is a H222 Host Bus Adapter (We are performing a firmware update tonight to fix another issue) Attached is the adamm.log
