Enabling Native Tape Drive Compression on LTO5 and LTO6 Drives
Does anyone have a walk through on enabling tape drive compression(NOT software compression)? I've been doing some research and it appears commands such as: sdparm - <device>, and sginfo -a displays the following information: Data compression (SSC) mode page: DCE 1 [cha: y, def: 1, sav: 1] DCC 1 [cha: n, def: 1, sav: 1] DDE 1 [cha: n, def: 1, sav: 1] RED 0 [cha: n, def: 0, sav: 0] COMPR_A 255 [cha: n, def:255, sav:255] DCOMPR_A 255 [cha: n, def:255, sav:255] I have 6 Netbackup 5200 and 5220s connected to an IBM3584 with 12 LTO4, 5, and 6 drives via FC. The library and drives are functioning however, I'm not getting no where near the data compression on the LTO6 tapes that I thought I would. I'm only seeing about 3.1TB on a LTO6 tape. Can someone explain the output above and what my settings should be. Thanks.Solved6.8KViews2likes7Commentsnetbackup appliance connection with tape library

Hello, is there a way to check the status of an SLP that is in progress? i would like to know stuff like %completion time, GB transferred, current kb/s. are there some best practices/tuning tips to improve performance of optimize deduplication between remote 5230 appliance and datacenter appliance (5230) over slow WAN links? is there a way to calculate possible throughput? thank you, florinSolved4KViews0likes6CommentsNBU Appliance IPMI KVM Disabled
I have a 5230 Appliance, I have managed to get the IPMI configured by using IPMITools. When I try to use the KVM portion (Click on the Remote Control tab) I get a pop-up saying "This feature has been disabled by an administrator" I followed the instructions setting up the bios, but there was not mention of doing anything with the redirection settings so I left them alone, have I missed something? All other functionality is there, but the java kvm does not work. (no prompt for plugin download, so something seems to be turned off)3.9KViews1like11CommentsNetBackup 7 and PDDO
Hi guys, Just looking for clarification that I have understood this correctly: I have a Netbackup 5000 appliance that I want to use as a disk pool in my current Netbackup 7 environment. I have read through the NBU PureDisk Deduplication Option Guide from which I gather I am going to have to go through the process of installing the PDDO plugin on a Netbackup media server to enable it to write Netbackup backups to the PureDisk storage pool. Have I understood this correctly?Solved3.2KViews0likes11CommentsHuge buffer delays
Hello I've been reading up on a few similar cases likehttps://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/slow-backups-after-upgrading-7503 andhttps://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-data-consumer-waiting-full-buffer-delayed-2186355-times and many others but there doesn't seem to be a solid solution from Symantec. For us, it started happening shortly after installing new Media appliances (Symantec 5230) We're running: Symantec Netbackup 7.5.0.7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Symantec Appliance 5230 2.5.4 with 4GBIT LAN and LTO5 drivers connected via fiber Backup jobs are not THAT affected: Info bptm(pid=14572) waited for full buffer 318 times, delayed 505 times Info bptm(pid=5678) waited for full buffer 2388 times, delayed 3075 times It's really when you get into duplication to tape that it gets incredibly slow: Info bptm(pid=16544) waited for full buffer 17723 times, delayed 51251 times Info bptm(pid=710) waited for full buffer 18813 times, delayed 57167 times Info bptm(pid=18885) waited for full buffer 41759 times, delayed 139268 times Our buffer settings: 7/16/2014 2:00:29 AM - Info bptm(pid=32588) using 262144 data buffer size 7/16/2014 2:00:29 AM - Info bptm(pid=32588) using 128 data buffers They used to be at 30 buffers, now with 128 I still get similar results... Here's a shot from the appliance settings: Any other ideas that might help? I thought getting the appliances was a good idea but now... not so much! We're using a Netbackup 5230 Appliance connected via 8Gb fibre to an HP MSL 8096 LTO 5 tape library with 4 drives. I've read many posts recommending leaving the buffer size as default: SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS : 262144 (Default) SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_DISK : 262144 (Default) SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_FT : 262144 (Default) This is how they are currently set, and when monitoring backups to disk, I see the following in the log: 01/29/2014 19:49:09 - Info bptm (pid=3752) using 262144 data buffer size 01/29/2014 19:49:09 - Info bptm (pid=3752) using 30 data buffers Which is expected, however, when duplicating to tape, the logs indicate the following: 01/31/2014 17:00:15 - Info bptm (pid=30607) using 65536 data buffer size 01/31/2014 17:00:15 - Info bptm (pid=30607) using 30 data buffers Can someone clarify why it would be set this way and is this as expected? HI, I have deployed a 5230 appliance with 2.6.1.2 release. During the configuration of FibreTransport media server, I had several issues with the link between SAN Switch (Brocade 16Gb FABOS 7.3.0c ) and the target ports on the appliance (port 1 on slots 5 & 6). Looking at the porterrorshow on my switchs I saw a lot of loss of sync on the Switchs ports. I have solved theses issues by setting the speed to 8 Gbs on the switch. Does anybody experiment the same issue with Appliance (for my part, it was the very first time after many deployement) ? regardsSolved2.5KViews0likes3Comments
