I didn’t here anything about a new version or will it be out soon?603Views6likes3CommentsFormer Ghost 15 user - Getting trapped in the SSR 2013 Trial
A few days ago I had an issue with doing a system restore using Ghost 15. I went to that forum for help and learned that Symantec was going to discontinue Ghost and recommended users "check out" SSR 2013 with its free trial. I downloaded the free trial and eventually learned it would not install unless I first remove Ghost. That wasn't from anything that I saw when the SSR installation failed; that happened without any additional information. However, I did eventually find my way to this forum and a helpful Guru pointed out the issue and also that I could always re-install Ghost if I wasn't happy with SSR. I uninstalled Ghost, installed SSR, and started backing stuff up. Now, if one of the things you want to do is a full system restore (my primary interest) then you need a recovery disk. SSR will make a recovery disk for you and all you need to do is provide an activation key which you don't get with the trial version. No problem, as all I need to do is install Ghost. But I can't install Ghost until I uninstall SSR. And SSR WILL NOT UNINSTALL. Whenever I try to uninstall it there's an Error 2738 and something about a VBasic error. So now I have a trial verision of a program that I can't use and a paid for program I can no longer load. I guess it can all be fixed if I pay Symantec for an activation key for a program that I'm not sure I want in the hopes it will maybe allow me to upgrade to a latter version that can uninstall so I can install the program I uninstalled so I could evaluate the Free Trial. To put it another way, I may have to pay Symantec to I can remove their free software and load back the software I paid them for as well. And, even it it turns out there's a simple, and hopefully less expensive, way out of this I've still wasted a lot of time on what should be a free trial of a comercial product which appears to be more of an alpha test. I need a solution Win 7-64 SSR 2013 11.0.2.49853 up to date. I have incremental backup sets that C Drive -020, C Drive -020_i001, C Drive -020_i002 , . . . . C Drive -020_i015, C Drive -020_i016, C Drive -020_i017, C Drive -020_i018. I had a problem and needed to restore from the backup named i015. Since the backup after 015 are "BAD" I would like to remove them. Can I simply manual remove them or is them a special way to remove them? I would like for a new backup set (-021) to start. Will simply remove the bad backups trigger a new set?557Views2likes4CommentsSystem Recovery 20xx and an Off Site Location
Hi All, As you know, when working with Off Site Locations (for example a 2nd UNC path) with System Recovery, when a backup completes SR will make sure all your backup data from your primary backup location is copied to the Off Site secondary location. I've also noticed that, if you have 3 base images + incrementals, if any file from any base image isnt present on the off site location then it gets re-copied from the primary. Thus keeping both the primary and secondary in sync. No issue there. My question being, what happens if there are images on the secondary that are not on the primary location? (Due to failure of the primary) Does SR copy BACK any missing images to re-populate the primary, not loosing any data and resync both locations, will it REMOVE the files on the secondary due to them not being on the primary, do nothing with the images on the secondary which effectivly will orphan them for manual removal, somthing else? Luckily we have not delt with this as a scenario yet and I didnt want to 'test' with a live site so currently the OffSite Secondary location is turned off so SR cannot get to it. Thanks all Wayne.875Views2likes5CommentsBackups Failing - Cannot create recovery points for job
Hi, 1st post. We have recently installed Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Management Console. We have deployed the Altiris Agent and the Backup Exec 2010 Plug in. We have a mixture of Server 2000/2003/2008R2 servers running BESR 8/8.5 and 2010. There are a group of servers that will not back up, the message they receive is as below (taken from Event Log) Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Fraserburgh Macrae. Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file. Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. Error E7D10046: Unable to set file size. Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. (UMI:V-281-3215-6071) Details: Source: Backup Exec System Recovery We are backing up across the LAN to a brand new NAS box. Permissions are correct and I can copy backup files between the server and NAS and the other way too. I have also amended the \\server\share to \\ipaddress\share to no avail. I have tried the articles listed via Google but am still at a loss as to what to do. If you are able to help that would be excellent as I have been struggling with Symantec Support for about 6 weeks for various issues with regards this installation. I have BESR 8.5 working with 2TB USB drive for backup. I am trying to add a 3TB USB drive as a backup location and it will allow me to select it but will not continue through the backup job creation. It just stops and will not continue when I click next. I saw some discussion on 3TB USB 3.0 drives being supported as hot backup (windows needs to be running) locations. Should this work? Is there an issue with 8.5 that does not exist in the current version?731Views2likes3CommentsSSR2011 Management Suite - Is this restricted to full image backup management only?
I have a client with Altiris 6.9 - he is upgrading to 7.1 and will lose the Recovery Suite functionality (EOL). He is looking to replace it with SSR2011 or BE DLO - the issue is, he is backing up 100+ PGP encrypted laptops. From what I read, DLO would give him a similar look/feel to RS, and BESR/SSR has some issues with PGP (as does DLO). I want to provide a balanced view to the client, 100+ laptops across the WAN completing full disk images may not be the solution if I use SSR2011 MS TIA Keith CSolved475Views2likes2CommentsBest practices for managing disk space on backup destinations
I asked in this forum before about an option I saw in the client side for "Automatically Optimize Storage". This would be an ideal setting as it says it will ""Delete old recovery point sets and limit file versions to remain within threshold without prompting"". But Chris stated that this is NOT an available option to select when creating a policy in BESR-MS. So that leads me to ask this now. I have multiple policies backing up to either a network storage server or to external drives on user PCs. The question I get asked by users a lot is "what happens if you run out of space for our backups?". It hasn't happened yet, but we are at a relative infant stage of this. My common setup is as follows: - high compression - number of recovery point bases maximum of 2 - start a new recovery point base weekly I am under the assumption that with these settings, my backups will at most create 2 of the large point bases and every week a new one will be created. Now does that mean the oldest one gets deleted/written over automatically? Just want to make sure as I recently changed this from monthly and I am trying to purge some older backups to regain space on my storage server. Am I doing this right or should I be manually monitoring all my backup destinations?Solved823Views2likes13CommentsMigrate Backup Exec 8.5 To SSR 2013 R2 Management Solution
I'm after any advise or war stories concerning people's experiences with moving from Symantec Backup Exec 8.5 to System Recovery 2013 Management Solution. We currently have 800 or so desktop pc's that are currently served by 2 Backup Exec 8.5 servers. The idea is to move these client pc's to our existing System Recovery Management Solution server. Any thoughts or Ideas on how best to achieve this will be greatly appreciated. One concern is that the single SSR Management Solution server would be insufficient to carry the load generated by 800 additional clients and I was wondering how I could distribute the workload across a secondary server.382Views1like1Comment
