Sharepoint archiving - re-indexing crawl in Sharepoint
Hi everyone. I just wanted to pick everyone's brain about something. Say we archive a few TB worth of Sharepoint documents and they all get replaced by shortcuts. My understanding is that during its re-indexing crawl, the Sharepoint server will reach to every archived document on EV and bring it over to be indexed (I am not talking about EV indexing but rather SP indexing). I guess an incremental crawl is not a big deal, but every once in a while Sharepoint needs to perform a full crawl, which means a few TB worth of data will be pulled from EV and dragged across the network back to the Sharepoint server for indexing purposes. I can't see how this is feasible. The full crawl will take weeks and may kill the network.Solved510Views13likes2CommentsEnterprise Vault Expiration process
We currently use Managed folders in exchange, let me be clear not Exchange manged folders but folders that we created through a utility that we then use EVPM to set a retention period on. We have setup the Managed folder utility so that it will create default folders based on your department/title. Some of the defaults are general correspondence, 1 year - Project updates, 2 years. The default folders are automatically pushed to the users mailbox, if they have additional requirements they can request additional folders with different retention through the managed folder utility. Once the folders are created a EVPM file is created and automatically ran that will assign the proper retention to the folders. This way when a user moves email around their mailbox they can change the retention based on what folder they place theemail in. If the user does not move the item and they leave it in their mailbox it will be archived at 30 days with a 90 day retention. IN short if the user wants to keep emails longer than 90 days they MUST take action and move it to the proper folder. Here in lies the problem that I am curious if anyone out that has noticed. We have over 200 millions emails archived in the vault and all of the corresponding shortcuts in the users mailboxes. The users constantly have access to move the emails around and thus change the retention. the fact that we have so many shortcuts in the mailboxes means that it takes 2-3 days to process 3500 mailboxes per exchange server. when expiration comes around it DOES NOT check where the shortcut is and it just expires based on what the Database says. so the end result is that items which should be retained are being expired. Orphan shortcut cleanup process then comes around and within 2-3 days removes the orphaned shortcut. Has anyone noticed this behavior in their environment?1.6KViews5likes5CommentsArchiving very slow on new install
I'm doing a brand new install of EV 10.0.2 - 1 server (virtual) with 4 cpus and 16 GB RAM, SQL on a separate server and Exchange 2010. After the install completed, we selected the first mailbox. A Run Now in Report mode took 3 minutes to complete and told us taht there were 56K messages to archive (2496 MB). I figured this should take an hour or so. I nextdid aRun Now in Archiving and Shortcut mode and it worked -- but it took about 9 hours! There were no errors and the performance was fairly consistent. I ran a dtrace to see what was going on but nothing was jumping out at me. After a couple of hours, I remembered tht we hadn't configured the A/V exclusions so we fixed that, rebooted and restarted the manual archive. Performance didn't improve.CPU load was under 5% and the message queues were empty. It only archived between 4500 and 5000 messages an hour @ average size 50K/msg. I know that the recommended minimum server configuration is now 8 cpu cores but they insisted on going with 4 and it isn't the bottleneck right now. My next guess would be that it can't read the data from Exchange fast enough, but we ran the throttling script before we started archiving and verified that the archiving task started without any errors. The partitions are on a network share but the storage queue was always at 0 while I was watching so I don't think that is the bottleneck either. Does anyone have suggestions on how to narrow this down? thanks, MarkSolved2.8KViews3likes11CommentsEnterprise Vault 8 High Availability best practice ?
Hi People, I got Symantec Enterprise v 8.0 SP4 as a VM which uses Physical RDM capability to leverage EMC SnapView replication from production site to DR site LUN level, however I wonder if this is the correct procedure since I cannot find any way to to create DR instance of EV that can be used in the disaster recovery scenario ? What are my options and how to achieve that in case the primary site is down completely in terms of Server and the storage ?Solved1.8KViews3likes9CommentsHow to manage the Enterprise Vault data content when it grows big and you are running out of disk space ?
Hi People, Can anyone suggest to me what is the best way to manage and sustain the Enterprise Vault data that grow bigger and larger every month ? My situation is that whenever my Exchange Server 2007 database drive is running low of disk space, I'd go to lower down the EV archive items from 6 months into 5 months and now down to 3 months just to create some room to breathe in the Exchange Server mailbox. I understand that this is not resolving the problem in the best way as it should since we just shifting away the disk space usage from Exchange into the Enterprise Vault. However what are my options to manage and sustain the growing data in the EV ? Can i offload to tape for the Vault data disk and then deleting it manually, what happens with the indexing and search when the data is archived to tape and I want to retrieve it later for some reason ? Any kind of assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Solved2.3KViews3likes12CommentsEV11 - indexing running behind? Check this
Hello all, I've been working on an issue we had the last few weeks, where the VAC reported 'items waiting to be indexed', and where the count went up day by day. While working with support, and in this forum, I also accidentally found an KB article of Symantec, describing hanging searches on DA/CA. As these use the indexes, I read the article. The article mentions that a specific Microsoft Update can cause issues with certain programms (TSM, SEP) and affects ASP, .Net and IIS. Hm... Indexing uses these too. We initially left archiving tasks in reportmode, to allow indexing to cactch up, ran dtraces etc. No succes. Support advised we might need to reinstall the indexing binaries. I decided to first have the updated MS Update applied. After having that update applied, and the EV-servers rebooted, indexing catched up. The VAC now shows "No problems detected". Information can be found here: The Symantec article: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH232439 The updated MS KB article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3092627 I hope this assists some of you in figuring out in resolving the issue (if you encounter this) Regards, GJ695Views2likes2CommentsRollover Volumes
Hi all, I'm trying to understand the rollover volume process. When a Rollover occurs to a new volume how does that affect the access to the archive data in the previous Volume? Can people still freely recall the data without IT intervention? Thanks in advanceSolved457Views2likes2CommentsBad performance - Transvault with Enterprise Vault
Hi all, currently we are migrating from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange. We also have to migrate our existing EV Archive Domino to EV Archive Exchange. We are using the Transvault software for migrating the archives. Now when we are migrating some archives we have a very bad bad performance - it converts about 0,5 mails/second - this seems to be extremly slow. All needed server are virtualized with vmware. When we trace these transactions, we find in the traces these entrys: 75117:46:14.561 [3256](StorageOnlineOpns)<3876>EV:M{CXMLIndexableItem::LoadProxies:#2236} Using global catalogue override GC://xy.kl.int 75217:46:14.561 [3256](StorageOnlineOpns)<3876>EV:M{CXMLIndexableItem::LoadProxies:#2246} Fetching proxy address for [SystemMbxName=SMTP:eve-sys1@xy.de] 75317:46:14.561 [3256](StorageOnlineOpns)<3876>EV:L{SanitizeUserName:#940} [SMTP:eve-sys1@xy.de] does not contain any chars that require encoding for LDAP or ADSI queries. 75417:46:14.561 [3256](StorageOnlineOpns)<3876>EV:M{FindUser:#391} Using searchbase [GC://xy.kl.int] 75717:46:16.855 [3256](StorageOnlineOpns)<3876>EV:M{FindUser:#393} Successfully bound to searchbase [GC://xy.kl.int] 75817:46:16.855 [3256](StorageOnlineOpns)<3876>EV:L{SanitizeUserName:#940} [SMTP:eve-sys1@xy.de] does not contain any chars that require encoding for LDAP or ADSI queries. As you can see we have about 1.5sec. delay when the request is sent to the GC and the response comes back. I already deactived all AV systems, firewalls etc - no change :-( So at the moment i am at the end of my knowledge - maybe somebody here in the forum has an idea? We are using Enterprise Vault 10.0.4 and Transvault 6.4.10.24 with Exchange 2010. Tnx in advance for your help! If you need more informations, i will post or send it! I need a little help on archive compression. I have read that all data is compressed as it is stored in the archives. I have also read that .CAB files are not compressed and .DVS files are not compressed. I am thinking that data moved to CAB files is already compressed and does not need to be compressed further. I am not sure about the .DVS files. I would also like to confirm that the only deduplication taking place is Single Instance Storage within the Vault stores. It is a file level process and not a block level process. All help will be much appreciated.Solved678Views2likes2Comments
