Restored DC will not boot after System State Restoration. hal.dll missing
Greetings, I have a domain controller (1 of 3) which must have a role removed before retiring. The drive crashed and server had to be rebuilt and manually restored with advanced team assistance. The C: restoration went well but the system state w/AD resulted in a hal.dll missing error and no boot. The server is Win2K8 Standard. The BE version is 2012 but newer than the final version of the server tape. The repaired / restored server shows a W2K8 svr installation on the drive/partition. I can browse the drives and directories from the repair command prompt. The curious items are 1) the OS drive letters flipped - OS is now D: and the recovery drive is C: and 2) in most directories almost every file has a duplicate which has additions to the extensions. I.E.the hal.dll file has below it a file named "hal.dll.USE1070C". I can run DISKPART to re-letter the volumes. I can run BCDEDIT to see details. I ran bootrec.exe to add the OS. I ran bootrec /fixboot and now have a missing bootmgr. I seek ideas before attempting to run bootrec /fixmbr as this may result in another hardware rebuild and tape restoration. A solution would be greatly appreciated as this is taking serious time away from other work. thnx5KViews0likes19CommentsBackup Exec 2014 SDR Crashing when booting from iso image

Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this and would it worked to import the backup exec catalog file from Server 2008 r2 Standard to another server of the same configuration with the same version of Backup Exec and were there any problems during/after the attempt.2.5KViews0likes8CommentsSDR error "Checking for a resource entry for this computer on the backup exec server"
I'm testing de SDR feature of Backup Exec 2012. I have a full Backup of a Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition SP2 32bit I tested to recover files, and works fine. Now I’m trying to recover the full computer and all works fine, until i get the error attached. The error occurs while "Checking for a resource entry for this computer on the backup exec server" The window display the "Cannot find a resource for this computer on the Backup Exec server. Make sure the Remote Agent for Windows Servers service is started". I Restart the Remote Agent on the server, and also restart the server, and the recover procedure several times with no changes. I’m stuck on this. Really appreciate help on this! Thanks in advance.2.4KViews1like14CommentsSimplified Disaster Recovery Disk
Can someone please just shed some light on the Simplified Disaster Recovery Disk? What exactly is it and how large will it be if I create one? Basically I have all my backups stored on an external exagrid (SAN based storage). Do I need this disk if the hardware itself dies and I need to restore my files? What advantage does the disk have over just getting my new hardware up, install the OS and then install BE2014 and restore my files that way? Does the disk allow you to restore the entire system state without having to reinstall the OS on failed hardware first? ThanksSolved2.2KViews0likes9CommentsHow to create a Disaster Recovery backup?
I have "succesfully* " created a Backup from my complete C drive of my SBS2011 server (the green light indicating it would be a good disaster recovery was on) to a external portable USB drive. (* Completed with some exceptions) What I would expect is that the USB drive must be made bootable so that in case of an emergency the server should be able to boot from the USB drive. Therefore I selected the option "Configuration and Settings" -> Create Disaster Recovery Disk. I selected Next, choose the first selection (From a previous CD DVD or from a folder) and browsed to my external USB drive. Then Next again. But selecting this gave me the warning"You must provide a valid source Simplified Disaster Recovery Disk." I think the procedure im following is not correct. Can somebody explain me how to create a bootable External USB drive that contains the backup of my SBS2011 server? The procedure that I found only tells me the wizard instructions, but that is exactly where I got stuck..2KViews0likes11CommentsEasy: Restoring from a RAID 1 device
Hya folks! Setup: BackupExec 2012 running on SBS 2011. Storage device is a 1GB drive plugged into a Stardom with a secondary disk that we manually swap and take offsite every week (actually, a collection of four such drives that we swap in series). This gives us backups going back four weeks. We want to restore a mailbox from three weeks ago. I've pulled the oldest RAID 1 disk out of rotation, mounted it in a usb enclosure, and shared it over the network. I am, however, not very familiar with how Backup Exec's manages storage devices and I am having trouble creating a Restore job from this network disk. Can someone please walk me through the process to create a Restore job from a network share for an old backup set? Part of the problem may be that the disk has the same identity as the active storage drive. I tried adding the network share in storage via the menu: Storage | Configure Storage | Disk-Based Storage | Disk Storage | ... Error message: "The disk storage device [PrimaryStorageDiskName] was found at the specified path. It is already a device on [ServerName] and cannot be added as a shared device." I'm sure it's a relatively trivial process, and my inexperience is the only major barrier. Much thanks!1.9KViews1like9CommentsNot following mount points, junction points message!
Hi, I am using a Dell Poweredge R710 connected to a Drobo 800i SAN that has the Deduplication drive configured to 4TB. I'm in the process of configuring BUE 2012 on all of our servers. When I am going through the job logs I noticed that even though I am getting reports showing completed and "Successful" backups to the Dedupe drive I get the following message on every "successful" job: Checkpoint restart cannot be applied to the following resource(s): System?StateBackup Exec will not follow mount points, junction points, and symbolic links when the Simplified Disaster Recovery indicator is ON. Drive and media mount requested: 1/22/2013 11:00:08 PM No appendable media could be mounted. Switching to overwrite operation on scratch media. 1) I want to use SRD on my Dedupe backups 2) Drobo is a recognized media for BUE - confirmed with Symantec and Drobo I have searched for answers (noticed someoen else getting told off for that in regards to this question- which was never answered.) I am also getting this error on other backup configured drives that are 1TB in size. Please note- the only other references I found references to tape and robotic media- and I do not use either. How do I eleiminate this error without eliminating the SRD? Thank you Ken1.9KViews2likes6CommentsBE2014 SDR questions
Hi Guys I have some simple questions regarding SDR in BE2014. I am running my BE2014 with SP1 and hot fix on Windows 2012 R2 server. Everything is functioning perfectly. I just want to make sure that i am following the correct practices regarding SDR of BE2014 itself. I am trying to make sure i can recover my environment in the following scenarios: A server (physical\virtual) in my environment is down, and i want to recover that. My Backup Exec 2014 server itself is down, and i need to recover that. I know that i have following data which put together help me recover the above mentioned scenarios: SDR recovery data path SDR recovery alternate data path SDR recovery disks (ISO file created for servers with SDR enabled) Backup sets BE2014 folders, DATA and CATALOG. What i dont understand is in case of recovery of a server, if i have a ISO image for that server, do i still need the files in the SDR recovery path to recover the server? I have recently setup av backup job where the DATA and CATALOG folder of BE2014 itself is taken backup of to an external storage. I selected the folder themself rather then the same databased under SQL selection, is that the correct way to select theese data for backup? I the selection is correct, is DATA and CATALOG folders enough to recover the BE2014 itself?Solved1.8KViews0likes7CommentsWindows 2012R2 with UEFI to Hyper-V
Hello, I have a full backup of a physical Windows 2012R2 Server with Backup Exec 15, and I want to restore it as a VM on a (different) Windows Hyper-V 2012R2 Server. I tried using the SDR disk, but there seems to be a problem with the UEFI configuration, evn though the VM is Gen-2. Is there a way to do this by using the SDR disk? Or, is there another way to perform the restore? Thank you in advance1.8KViews0likes9Comments
