OST and storage server creation
Hi, Im trying to create an OST disk pool and although the storage server is created successfully with the following command: nbdevconfig -creatests -storage_server <datadomain_name> -stype DataDomain -media_server <media_server_name> but it fails when tried to add the media server as a data mover with the following command: tpconfig -add -storage_server<same data domain name as before> -stype DataDomain -sts_user_id <user> -password <password> I have logged straight into the data domain with the supplied credentials and it gets in fine. I've checked its not using a mix of FQDN and shortnames by making everything local, even on the data domain, ive restarted nbrmms on the media server a few times so I'm bit at a loss to what to try next. The error I get is: Failed to open server connection to type DataDomain server scodd1: Error = 2060046 Authorization failed for OpenStorage server scodd1 Im using netbackup 7.0.1, DataDomain OS version is 4.9 and the OST plugin is version 2.5.1.0-326737. My media server is RHEL5. Could it be that I'm using too new a version of the OST plugin? I find it odd its happy to create the storage server but wont pass credentials. There was nothing I could see in the release notes to say the version of the OST plugin (which is the newest stable release) wouldnt work with 4.9 but maybe im wrong. Does any have experience of these versions? Thanks in advance for any help given. RobertSolved4.2KViews0likes4CommentsNBU with DD boost over FC
Hi, I'm currently doing some test for a project that the client is going to use NBU with data domain boost. We tried and sucess to backup data to DD boost through NBU, however, I can't establish the connection between NBU server and DD. Even the NBU server is visable to DD, NBU server wouldn't be able to mount the DD and see it on the device manager. Have search the NBU compatibilty matrix on http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH59978 but I couldn't found the compatility of NBU and DDOS. 1) Can someone share the experience of using DDBoost over FC with NBU? 2) We are suspecting this is the compatability issue between NBU and DDOS, would that be a case? We are currently testing on Win server 2008 R2 with NBU 7.6.1 and DDOS 5.5.0.1. Best, BrianSolved4.1KViews1like3CommentsNetbackup 7 - Incorrect disk pool available space
Hi, I'm currently testing Netbackup 7 in our lab. I created a media server dedup disk pool (on a Win2k8 R2 Std 64 bits server). Backups were working fine until recently. I'm now getting error 129 (insuffisent disk space). After looking at the drive, I only had 18gb left (the drive is 1TB). I went in the catalog and expired a bunch of older backups. My disk space is now back to 120gb but for some reason, Netbackup's disk pool properties still report only 18gb as available space. I've tried restarting services (and even rebooting the server) but nothing changed. I figured maybe it would get updated by one of the admin tasks that runs every night so I left it like that for the week-end but this morning, the console still shows 18gb available space. Is there a way to force Netbackup to recalculate the available space? Also, on a related note... looking at the disk pool properties, there is a "Disk volumes" section where it reports my 18gb free space. I've search a lot but couldn't find a way to add a 2nd volume to the disk pool (didn't find anything in the admin guide or the console). Since the section has a "s" to volumes, I'm guessing it is doable. Can anyone point me in a direction in case I'd eventually need to add a 2nd lun to the server for additional space? Thanks a lot for your help! PhilippeSolved3.4KViews1like12CommentsDuplication jobs are stuck at "Waiting for positioning of media id"
We have an NetBackup 7.5.0.6 environment running on an RHEL5 Master Server and two RHEL5 Media Servers. Each server has access to all 16 LTO4 tape drives connected via two different libraries. On a regular basis I can encounter duplication jobs which seem to be stuck. All resources have been granted and a proper tape has been mounted. The file list contains the first image which should be duplicated in this batch and NetBackup claims that it's waiting for positioning the media. This can take take hours until finally the duplication process starts and then proceeds at expected speed (350 GiB/h) with multiple images in the batch. I know that positioning is not an issue as the same media and drives are used for B2T jobs which never show such behavior. Did anybody encounter something like this? Any hint where to look and what to check? Thanks Markus2.6KViews1like12CommentsWhat is the best way to use NetBackup Appliance to backup large NAS system
We are in the middle of a project to replace our current BackupExec 2012 with Data Domain 565 backup architecture with one of 3 possible solutions: 1. NetBackup 5230 Appliances (1x5230 with 76TB at primary DC and 2x5230 with 76TB each at secondary DC) 2. EMC Avamar/DD2500 (with NDMP Accelerator node and 1x90TB at primary DC and 1x135TB at secondary DC) 3. Commvault Simpana (dont have as much detail on this option, mainly looked at a Backup Service with a local provider that would use this system) Here are some details about our current storage architecture: Primary SAN = EMC VNX 5300 with some block level and file level storage Secondary SAN = EMC VNX 5300 with some block level and file level storage Use RecoverPoint to replicate block level storage (LUNs) between SANs Use VNX Replicator to replicate file level storage (file systems) netweem SANs We are almost 100% virtualized with VMware 5.0 host servers (3 hosts at primary and 3 hosts at secondary sites) 100Mbps metro ethernet between data centers Ok, so here is where our backup problems come up: 5 x NAS file systems stored on file level side of VNX 5300 fs1 = 7.2TB file system takes too long to back up fs2 = about 8TB of small files that is out image archive system (130 milion files) fs3 = large file archive about 11TB, only has data added each quarter of the year (about 400-500GB per quarter), these files are manally moved from production file systems into this archive area, but users need access to this read only data 24x7 as needed This is probably enough detail for now... We like the Symantec approach and would like to go with it but are not 100% sure how it will handle these lare file systems. We have been told so far that we can use NetBackup Accelerator to backup the large file systems, but it I am not convinced. I do like the way the NetBackup appliance is directly attached to the storage and I think that will help make the backup jobs more efficient with less network parts in the puzzle. I also like the NBU interface best so far. I like the Avamar/Data Domain approach since we are familar with Data Domain already and we know what kind of depuplication we should get. Plus, since we have had the EMC VNX SANs, I have had good experience with EMC support so far and this would be more of the same in that sense. Symantec support for BackupExec... sucks... I am not a big fan of NDMP and the Avamar solution would leverage that. I have seem many posts that Anyway, I guess what I am hoping to hear is someone has gone through something simular and has used a NBU appliance with NBU accelerator to SUCCESSFULLY backup their large NAS file systems ON A VNX series SAN. OR is Avamar with NDMP backups our best bet.Solved2.6KViews1like7CommentsAIR Replication via specific media server
Hi At a client we have a large AIR environment and some DB's that are deployed as media servers. When our AIR SLP's do replications between the various DataDomains, it seems to pick a random Media server. in the past we use to use the Media Server override to lock down Media servers. So that the Media server that did the backup would do the restore. Is there anything like that, that we can do with air to ensure the SLP uses a specific media server, or preferably the media server that backed up the date.Solved2.3KViews0likes5CommentsNetbackup : MSDP replication between remote sites within the same domain
Hello, I'm looking for feedback about replicating data from MSDP media server on remote sites back to main site. As they are on the same domain, I guess I won't be able to use AIR. Is there something similar for intra domain replication ? Is there a way to boost finger print seeding ? (without using tapes or moving servers) Or will it be better to create a local master server and use AIR ? BTW, what is occuring if a regular duplication or AIR is failling ? Is there a resuming feature, or do we just rely on the learned deduplication info to partly recover the already duplicated info ? Last be not least, I'm using resilient connection (works really nice with file backups). Is it possible to strip the stream to multiple streams ? I've got huge latency, and tcp is shapped.
