BackupExec 2014 - No writable idle devices available
Hello, I'm needing some help with what to me is a strange issue. I have several jobs which were queued but not running even though they should have completed. I found that the spoold service was stuck or hung in a starting condition. After searching the forums before I tried anything, I re-started the server and this time the spoold service is no longer hung. All services are running correctly. Now I'm getting a Job Status of Ready; No writable idle devices are available. Also when I go to the storage tab I find that everything is online except Deduplication disk storage 0001 of the Robotic library says it is offline. I am using BE2014 v14.1 rev 1786 64-bit on a Dell PowerEdge R320 Server running Windows 2012 R2 Server Standard (full installation) 64-bit. I appreciate any help that I can get for this issue. I'm not sure what other information anyone may need. I'll be happy to try and supply any information needed. Thanks in advance for your assistance!Solved7.9KViews0likes10CommentsV-79-57344-38264 - Unable to copy the virtual machine disk using the VMware VixDiskLib.
Hello Everyone, Currently we have a server 2008 64bit server with BE 2014 which was upgrade from 2012 and for some strange reason I keep getting this particular error message while backing up a few VMs as you can see below. V-79-57344-38264 - Unable to copy the virtual machine disk using the VMware VixDiskLib. VixDiskLib_Read() reported the error: NBD_ERR_DISKLIBV-79-57344-38366 - WARNING: "VMVCB::\\10.0.1.5\VCGuestVm\(DC)ha-datacenter(DC)\vm\SCSMDW\SCSMDW\SM Warehouse-000002.vmdk" is a corrupt file. This file cannot verify. Transport mode 'nbd' was used for the read operation of the disk 'SM Warehouse_1-000002.vmdk' In addition, I have research this particular message and I have not yet found anything online that is exactly what I am having issues with. Furthermore to provide additional background information the issue that I am having with the VM are on an Exsi host that is running version 5.5.5.7KViews0likes17CommentsBackupExec & EMC Datadomain
Hello; Nowadays I need to implement a deduplicated disk based backup&recovery solution for a clustered vmware system which is hosting exchange 2010 and AD servers... I have to decide how to position deduplication and backup software solutions together. In some articles I see that Symantec Backupexec and/or Netbackup is used with EMC Datadomain EMC Datadomain has deduplication feature and it's used also as a backup/recovery software. If I buy EMC Datadomain, will I need to another software Symantec Backupexec or Netbackup ? Both Backupexec and Netbackup has "deduplication" feature. If I prefer Backupexec, what's the advantage of Datadomain as an additional appliance?4.5KViews1like5CommentsWindows Change Journal not working with Offhost Backup
After my Update to Backup Exec 2012 I wanted to try using Off Host Backups for our file server. The data is stored on a Dell Power Vault MD 3000i and I am using the newest hardware snapshot provider from Dell: SmVssProvider (Version 10.80.10). I also want to use True Image Restore and therefore created a backup job with the "using catalogs" option. Now I ran into the following issue: I created a backup job with "using catalogs" and the hardware snapshot provider. Full and incremental jobs seem to work fine. If I change the job definition to use the Offhost feature the full backup job runs way faster but I get the following warning for incremental jobs: "The Windows Change Journal is unavailable or incomplete. This resource will be backed up without using the Windows Change Journal." If I understood correctly this means Backup Exec has to use the catalogs instead of the NTFS change journal leading to a significant performance impact. Can anybody help me finding the reason for this issue?Solved3KViews0likes10CommentsIs it Possible to disable VSS

I don't know if this is a new suggestion or if this is a capability in Backup Exec that I haven't discovered. When I backup with Backup Exec 2010 R3. I have some jobs that Backup to Disk, then with the policy I have a Duplicate backup the data to Tape I constantly have to battle running out of disk space, and jobs failing because there was some issue that kept the Tape drive busy. I would like to be able to see when my backup to disk media has been copied to Tape. Knowing this would insure that I am getting these backups to Tape. I regularly have to free up disk space to keep the Backup to Disk running, and with all the jobs I have running, it is hard to determine which have been backed up to Tape. One way I see would be a good solution if it is possible is: A policy or rune that changes the status of the disk media to Overwritable after the disk media is copied "successfully" to Tape? Or even better yet update the overwritable expiration date based on the completion of a successful duplicate to disk copy. I do not have Advanced Disk based backup option, does this provide such a feature? Hello, We are trying to use BE2010 to set up backups for a Hyper-V cluster on Windows Server 2008 R2. Our SAN is an iSCSI Dell MD3000i. We have installed the hardware provider on all the Hyper-V hosts, and it shows up properly in vssadmin list providers: vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp. Select a valid VSS snapshot provider for the target computer. If we disable the Advanced Disk-Based backup option, that error doesn't show up, however, we get an error saying The job failed There's this additional information logged by Backup Exec: - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\Hyper-V.domain.int\Hyper-V?HA?VM\VM1". Operation: Executing Asynchronous Operation Context: Current State: DoSnapshotSet We have contacted Dell assuming it was a problem with their Hardware VSS provider software, but they insisted the problem was with Backup Exec and that hardware VSS provider is working as designed. The BE2010 documentation states that SmVssProvider for MD3000i is supported. On a related note, we have also tried DPM 2010 with the provider and the same error occurs in the VSS provider: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.dataprotectionmanager&tid=b608a39e-b0cc-4f9c-b126-98ceb723476e&mid=b608a39e-b0cc-4f9c-b126-98ceb723476e&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&p=1 Again, Dell claims it's not their problem, so any help in getting this to work for us would be appreciated. We're interested in Backup Exec but can't license if this doesn't work. If the problem turns out to be indeed in the VSS provider, please let us know so we can refer Dell to the official Symantec response. Thank you very much.2.4KViews2likes16CommentsAOFO Best Practices
Hello, I currently use different versions of Backup Exec SBS ranging from version 11d to 12.5 among about 15 clients that the company I work for Manage. All clients either have a Windows SBS 2003 or SBS 2008 server pretty much doing everything for the business, (exchange, Active directory, SharePoint, File Server etc). What would be the best practices for using AOFO when backing up an entire system. I know that AOFO should not be used on exchange because it only takes a snapshot preventing the restore of an individual mailbox/email to be restored. But what about things like System State Data, and Shadow Copy Components? Should AOFO be turned on to back up these services? I have been searching the web for the past couple of days trying to get a definitive answer so it can now become a standard for all of our clients. Any help from you guys out there on how you set your backup system up would be greatly appreciated as well. BTW if it helps a IBM LTO tape system is being used as the media. Thanks in Advance.
