Hi! On our good old Windows XP machines for backup and recovery in our small business we used Symantec's Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image. Now we are switching to Windows 8.1 and will also add a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials (the new Microsoft Small Business Server). Because Microsoft's built-in free backup cannot be configured with advanced options and does not seem to be very reliable we are now looking for a new and hopefully better small business (paid) solution. What we actually need is an imaging solution with backup tasks that can be targeted at lokal disks as well as network shares and USB disks attached to the server for offsite rotation. Automatic nightly backups through wake on LAN or BIOS wake up timer are needed, so the backup solution should be also able to turn off the PCs after backup. Unfortunately, it turns out that there are not any reliable solutions out there in 2014! We tested Acronis business products which turned out to have nice features but are very unreliable and unusable in the end. We tested ARCserve which is ok but cannot be configured much, it actually offers only a single backup task and does not have Win 8.1 support, although it claims to be certified for this OS already - they wanted to send me some internal beta patches but we did not accept this. And so finally we came to System Recovery 2013 which was actually not easy to find between all the other solutions on the market, maybe it is the lack of marketing information available... So we finally tested SSR 2013 SP2 on our Win 8.1 desktops and it seems to work fine - better than the other solutions. There are not many changes compared to Norton Ghost but it does its job, can be configured with advanced options and that's what we need. Now the problem with Symantec System Recovery 2013 is that there is too few information on this product and there is nobody to ask. You want to buy a product and there is no info - really annoying! In the key features you read about Win 8.1 / Server 2012 R2 support (and it seems to be available through SP2) but nobody seems to care to update this info in the system requirements on Symantec's website. Does not sound very promising for a business product. The situation is even worse when looking for information about the Server editions of SSR. There is a Server Edition and a Small Business Server Edition. But what is the difference? Can they backup Hyper-V virtual machines? From the host? From the guest? Is Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials supported in the SBS edition? The Essentials Server is actually Microsoft's new small business server so it should... I requested a callback from Symantec here in Germany but nobody seems to care. It is also still unclear how many licenses I need. In the new Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Microsoft allows to install the OS on the physical host + on one free Hyper-V server VM. Is this Hyper-V VM also covered by the SSR Small Business Server Edition license? Do I need any additional agents if I need to backup from the physical server AND from whithin the virtual Hyper-V server (file level recovery is needed)? How much will it finally cost? I don't find any docs especially for the server editions and I don't see any clear Hyper-V licensing statements. Again, very disappointing for a business product. But maybe someone here can provide more info to help us in our decision? Thanks in advance. AnguelSolved2.1KViews3likes16CommentsFormer Ghost 15 user - Getting trapped in the SSR 2013 Trial
A few days ago I had an issue with doing a system restore using Ghost 15. I went to that forum for help and learned that Symantec was going to discontinue Ghost and recommended users "check out" SSR 2013 with its free trial. I downloaded the free trial and eventually learned it would not install unless I first remove Ghost. That wasn't from anything that I saw when the SSR installation failed; that happened without any additional information. However, I did eventually find my way to this forum and a helpful Guru pointed out the issue and also that I could always re-install Ghost if I wasn't happy with SSR. I uninstalled Ghost, installed SSR, and started backing stuff up. Now, if one of the things you want to do is a full system restore (my primary interest)then you need a recovery disk. SSR will make a recovery disk for you and all you need to do is provide an activation key which you don't get with the trial version. No problem, as all I need to do is install Ghost. But I can't install Ghost until I uninstall SSR. And SSR WILL NOT UNINSTALL. Whenever I try to uninstall it there's an Error 2738 and something about a VBasic error. So now I have a trial verision of a program that I can't use and a paid for program I can no longer load. I guess it can all be fixed if I pay Symantec for an activation key for a program that I'm not sure I want in the hopes it will maybe allow me to upgrade to a latter version that can uninstall so I can install the program I uninstalled so I could evaluate the Free Trial. To put it another way, I may have to pay Symantec to I can remove their free software and load back the software I paid them for as well. And, even it it turns out there's a simple, and hopefully less expensive, way out of this I've still wasted a lot of time on what should be a free trial of a comercial product which appears to be more of an alpha test. (If I sound upset, it's because I really am)2.4KViews3likes12CommentsHow to install the Symantec Management Agent by users without local administrator rights
Sadly it isn't possible for us to deploy the Symantec Management Agent from the SSR2011 console. See one of my previous posts. Since we have more than 200 laptops that we want to backup using SSR2011, it would be great if we can deploy the SMA on some other ways: I tried to run the install at some clients from the Download Page URL. Users with local administrator rights can install the Agent, Others without these rights, won't install the agent. Since most users don't have local administrators this won't be a good solution. We would like one of the following options: - Deploying the SMA by MSI-file by Active Directory - Create some kindof installer.exe that users can use to install the software without to change lcoal admin rights (This was the way we used succesfully with Symantec Backupexec for desktop 8.5) Any other suggestion is welcome. Can anyone help with our urgent problem? Best regards, Danny ter HorstSolved629Views3likes3CommentsBESRM 2010 losing clients and/or policy assignments
I am running BESR 2010 with around 200 clients. Yesterday when viewing them in the BESRM, about 120 of them went from the staus of installed with a working backup policy assigned to clients showing up as not installed and no policies or the clients just don't show up at all in the computer list. I check physically on the machines and the BESR 2010 software is still installed, but will say in trial mode (since license policy isn't being applied) with no backup jobs. The only thing I did yesterday was delete some old backup destinations. I followed the instructions in this knowledge base article: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH153587&key=53845&actp=LIST Unfortunately it looks like this procedure suggested by Symantec deletes clients or the relationship between them and the BESRM. Now I have a bunch of PCs that aren't reporting it or think they are not installed and are not running their backups. Outside of restoring back to the previous day's image for the BESR server, how do I fix this? So far I've been able to get some PCs back by restarting the Altiris Agent and BESR services and reseting the agent via the Altiris Agent Task Status tab. I've then had to go back into the policies I've created and re-add the clients to the right ones. This is a lot of work to re-do 100+ clients this way. Ultimately I have a feeling that I will have to do this for each client and that the removal of the backup destination associations procedure I did was the cause. If so, then what is a safer way of removing backup destinations?456Views3likes5CommentsSSR 2013 Agent is holding a connection open on a CIFS share
From our SSR management server I'm creating jobs that schedule backups for quite a few servers (about 50) in the same domain. I'm pointing their backups to a CIFS share on another storage unit, but that storage unit accepts only 32 connections at a time. Once 32 machine connect to that share to perform their SSR backup, none of them releases their connection -- even after their backups are completed. Is there a way to make them release their connection? All the servers being backed up are either 2008 R2 or Server 2012 (mostly R2).Solved1.6KViews2likes11CommentsProblème de deploiement d'agent sur un poste client en XP SP3
