NBU Appliance IPMI KVM Disabled
I have a 5230 Appliance, I have managed to get the IPMI configured by using IPMITools. When I try to use the KVM portion (Click on the Remote Control tab) I get a pop-up saying "This feature has been disabled by an administrator" I followed the instructions setting up the bios, but there was not mention of doing anything with the redirection settings so I left them alone, have I missed something? All other functionality is there, but the java kvm does not work. (no prompt for plugin download, so something seems to be turned off)3.9KViews1like11CommentsNetBackup KMS when appliance is master/media?
Hi, Master/media NB5230 v2.6.0.1, and FC to LTO6 drives in HP MSL 2024. I know how to setup and configure NetBackup KMS. At this point in time I'm not interested in MSEO. The Appliance v2.6.0.1 Admin Guide, on page 106, says: "The NetBackup appliance supports writing to the tape devices that are capable of SCSI T10 encryption to ensure that the tape media that is moved off-site is secure. Tape encryption requires configuration the NetBackup Key Management Service (KMS) feature. Note: The KMS feature is supported when the appliance is configured as a media server only in a NetBackup domain. A NetBackup master server appliance cannot administrate KMS. A non-appliance master server is required to administrate KMS with the devices that are connected to a NetBackup appliance." Obviously it is quite clear that: - NetBackup KMS on appliance master not supported (because it cannot see tape drives) - NetBackup KMS on appliance media supported (because it can see tape drives) But, can I infer that this is true: - NetBackup KMS on appliance master/media supported (because it can see tape drives) ...because the appliance (although acting as a master server) is also acting as a media server. However, this would conflict with '...is supported when the appliance is configured as a media server only...' And here grammar can get in the way - is NetBackup KMS supported on media appliances 'only' when in a NetBackup domain? If so, then is NetBackup KMS supported on master/media servers because the media server function is a member of a NetBackup domain, i.e. the master function on the same appliance? I wish the document made a statement regarding appliances that are 'master/media'. Thanks.Solved1.4KViews3likes3CommentsEstimating time to upgrade appliances to 7.6.0.2
Hello, We have (6) NetBackup 5220 appliances, all running 7.5.0.7 (2.5.4 code). 3 of the appliances have 72TB of stoarge with 60% utilized, and the other 3 have 36TB each. I am looking to upgrade them to 7.6.0.2 soon. I was wondering if anyone experienced a lengthy process of getting the appliances upgraded to 7.6.0.2. The reason I am asking is that I have read where there is a conversion process on the storage pool that may take an extended amount of time, and I will need to take this into consideration when planning my downtime window for the upgrade. I came across a utility that you can run that will estimate how long the conversion process may take. You can find it in the following tech note: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH213728 I ran the utility on each of my 72TB appliances and it came back with an estimate of 9 hours just to do the conversion process on the storage pool! Is this normal and I should just expect this and plan accordingly? If so, is there anything I can do to cut that time down, because with that process and everything else that goes with the upgrade, I could be looking at a downtime window of 10-11 hours easy. Doesn't that sound a little crazy? How am I supposed to keep the appliances down and essentially not run any backups or restores during this time, which will more than likely end up being during the day, hoping that I can get them done and available before my nightly backups run. Should I look at spreading them out across multiple days, and if I do, will my master server be able to communicate with each of the appliances if they are on different version levels? Thank you! I am simply looking for some information regarding these PDDO appliances. Are they being phased out as a result of the increased capacity of their MSDP counterparts (5220/5230)? I was in contact with one of our reps and they mentioned the 5030 was becoming obsolete because the 5230 was doubling in capacity. However, there is a major difference between obsolete and no longer to be developed and produced. While MSDP is cool, I feel that it still limits me in the area of concurrent operations and overall disk performance and for this reason, the 5030 still has a place in the data center. If Symantec plans to abandon the 5000 PDDO series in favor of the 5200 MSDP series, then they will need to increase performance to go with the capacity they are touting. We are currently at this cross-roads and are trying to determine our direction and it would seem the best decision is to use a 5030 with my own media server as opposed to locking myself into a MSDP solution with limited perfmance when comparing the two.Solved1.4KViews2likes3CommentsWhat is the best way to use NetBackup Appliance to backup large NAS system
We are in the middle of a project to replace our current BackupExec 2012 with Data Domain 565 backup architecture with one of 3 possible solutions: 1. NetBackup 5230 Appliances (1x5230 with 76TB at primary DC and 2x5230 with 76TB each at secondary DC) 2. EMC Avamar/DD2500 (with NDMP Accelerator node and 1x90TB at primary DC and 1x135TB at secondary DC) 3. Commvault Simpana (dont have as much detail on this option, mainly looked at a Backup Service with a local provider that would use this system) Here are some details about our current storage architecture: Primary SAN = EMC VNX 5300 with some block level and file level storage Secondary SAN = EMC VNX 5300 with some block level and file level storage Use RecoverPoint to replicate block level storage (LUNs) between SANs Use VNX Replicator to replicate file level storage (file systems) netweem SANs We are almost 100% virtualized with VMware 5.0 host servers (3 hosts at primary and 3 hosts at secondary sites) 100Mbps metro ethernet between data centers Ok, so here is where our backup problems come up: 5 x NAS file systems stored on file level side of VNX 5300 fs1 = 7.2TB file system takes too long to back up fs2 = about 8TB of small files that is out image archive system (130 milion files) fs3 = large file archive about 11TB, only has data added each quarter of the year (about 400-500GB per quarter), these files are manally moved from production file systems into this archive area, but users need access to this read only data 24x7 as needed This is probably enough detail for now... We like the Symantec approach and would like to go with it but are not 100% sure how it will handle these lare file systems. We have been told so far that we can use NetBackup Accelerator to backup the large file systems, but it I am not convinced. I do like the way the NetBackup appliance is directly attached to the storage and I think that will help make the backup jobs more efficient with less network parts in the puzzle. I also like the NBU interface best so far. I like the Avamar/Data Domain approach since we are familar with Data Domain already and we know what kind of depuplication we should get. Plus, since we have had the EMC VNX SANs, I have had good experience with EMC support so far and this would be more of the same in that sense. Symantec support for BackupExec... sucks... I am not a big fan of NDMP and the Avamar solution would leverage that. I have seem many posts that Anyway, I guess what I am hoping to hear is someone has gone through something simular and has used a NBU appliance with NBU accelerator to SUCCESSFULLY backup their large NAS file systems ON A VNX series SAN. OR is Avamar with NDMP backups our best bet.Solved2.6KViews1like7CommentsYou’re invited – NetBackup usability feedback sessions coming up!

We have 8 5220 appliances and 4 5020 appliances at this point. We are increasing our count as I write this by adding an additional 6 5220 appliances and 8 5020 appliances. In the last six months we have replaced four array batteries in these devices. One in a 5020 and three in the 5220 appliances. We now have to replace yet another in a device we replaced the battery in two weeks ago. Let it be noted that we are at the latest firmware. Has any one else experienced this deplorable quality of battery?618Views0likes4Comments
