What is the best practice after the Exchange Mailbox user is leaving the company ?
Hi, Can anyone share what is the best pratice to do after you archive the Exchange Server mailboxes with EV according to this article (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH67757) ? Do you still keep it or can you safely delete it from the Exchange Server which will means it deletes the AD account as well. I've never delete all of my Exchange Server mailboxes in the company before because i do not know what or how to access the archived email from the EV console. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. ThanksSolved1.4KViews4likes5CommentsSymantec Netbackup 7 licensing
Hi All, I'd like to know if I'm getting this correctly. I'm planning to getNetbackup 7 Starter Editionaccording tob-symc_netbackup_7_core_DS_12995286-2.en-us.pdf(http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/fact_sheets/b-symc_netbackup_7_core_DS_12995286-2.en-us.pdf)Table 2. the Edition comparison the Starter Edition can have 5 Server (supported clients) does this means i can have the following backup items: 1x ESXi 4 server (using vStorage API for inline deduplication - Change Block Tracking) 1x Solaris SPARC + Oracle DB 10gR2 1x Linux 1x Windows Server + Share Point 2007 (Granular restore) 1x Windows Server + Exchange Server 2007(Granular restore) all of the above with bare metal restore capability. Since it is said that i could have: Server Clients, Tape Drive and Database Agents included ? yes I understand that Deduplication is not included here since it will need another license to spend. I'm getting confused here of which product that i should get :-| Would be good if anyone can clarify this please ?Solved1.2KViews4likes6CommentsUnable to see the exchange information store.
Setup. Master Server 6.5.3 Windows server 2003 Client 6.5.3 Windows server 2003 Exchange 2007. Trying to backup exchange mailboxes but they are failing with status 41 and this is failing only when he runs the fullbackups the differential backups are running fine. The exchange server is clustered. And the information store backups run fine. On BAR FOUND that the customer was not able to not see the information store and was also not able to see anything after expanding the exchange maiboxes. Than tried creating a test account gave the domain admin credentials, also assinged the exchange server role, activated the mailbox, after that started the netbackup services with the new test account but still was not able to expand the exchange mailboxes and was also not able to see the information store. Also asked him to do a failover of his cluster. Please help.567Views4likes4CommentsBackup Exec // B2D media used for Exchange 2007 Information Store associated to scratch media
Hello, I am new to Symantec BEWS and I have just created a new Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape backup job copying predefined policy "Duplicate Backup Sets 00001". BE Media Server is running Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 while the Exchange Server is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 with MS Exchange Agent. Target device for the Disk-to-Disk job is a newly created Backup-to-Disk folder, target media set is a newly created media set with 1 week OPP and 8-hour AP. Last night the Disk-to-Disk backup job ran the first time and completed successfully without errors. This morning I went through the device and media information section under job history. This section showed "B2D000006", "IMG000004" and "IMG000005" as used media, but how comes that "B2D000006" media belongs to pre-defined Scratch Media set while both "IMG000004" and "IMG000005" belong to the newly created media set according to Template properties ? I know that GRT-enabled backup jobs result in IMG folders being created during job execution, but how comes that media created during the same backup job is associated to different media sets ? Furthermore how comes that used capacity for that media is not shown under Devices -> Backup-to-Disk folders -> My Backup-to-Disk folder while used capacity for other media under different Backup-to-Disk folders used for normal file backup jobs is displayed ? Any help is much appreciated. Have a great day. Regards, Massimiliano259Views4likes1CommentExchange 2010 DAG - Virtual backup or not?
Hi We currently have all our Exchange mailbox servers and CAS/HUB servers virtualized with VMware. We are using Backup Exec 2012. Right now i have installed Remote Agents on the mailbox servers, and i have setup the backup to go directly to the DAG (not going through vCenter). Would it be better (in terms of speed, reliability, best practices etc) to do the backup of the DAG through vCenter? Do i gain something/do i lose something? Thanks in advance.Solved564Views3likes1CommentHow to manage the Enterprise Vault data content when it grows big and you are running out of disk space ?
Hi People, Can anyone suggest to me what is the best way to manage and sustain the Enterprise Vault data that grow bigger and larger every month ? My situation is that whenever my Exchange Server 2007 database drive is running low of disk space, I'd go to lower down the EV archive items from 6 months into 5 months and now down to 3 months just to create some room to breathe in the Exchange Server mailbox. I understand that this is not resolving the problem in the best way as it should since we just shifting away the disk space usage from Exchange into the Enterprise Vault. However what are my options to manage and sustain the growing data in the EV ? Can i offload to tape for the Vault data disk and then deleting it manually, what happens with the indexing and search when the data is archived to tape and I want to retrieve it later for some reason ? Any kind of assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Solved2.3KViews3likes12CommentsBESR 2010 GRO Exchange issues with monthly incrementals
Can anyone verify successfully using GRO in BESR 2010 on a Win7/2008 x64 machine, from a backup set with more restore points than available drive letters (22)? Okay so here is my issue. We have many clients we have been pushing out BESR 2010 to replace their current tape backup systems. Problem first noticed on a new 2008 r2 Server x64, running Exchange 2010 with BESR 2010 SP2. This Server is set to run Monthly Incremental Jobs to a hot swap sata disk, then gets copied to 2 offsite sata disks. All aspects of the backups have been running great along with mounting and restores with the exception of GRO. Here is what happens: Environment: We have a secondary 2008 r2 Server x64, with Outlook 2007 installed. 1. We attempt to run GRO, from the choice for mounting we choose "use recovery points from another computer" 2. Browse and locate the s2vi file (index) for the backup drive on the primary server attempting be to recovered. 3. When selected the name of the Server is displayed in the list, highlight and chose next. 4. Password is requested, input and passes. 5. at this point if we watch the computer (windows explorer) while the gro attempts to load the recovery points it assigns a drive letter for each recovery point. 6. Eventually GRO displays a warning that not all restore points will be available and the program screen for the GRO that would show mailboxes and also the drop down to choose the restore point to get data from is blank. 7. If you go to explorer you can see all drive letters are now filled with mounted restore points and they are able to be browsed. 8. GRO is locked and need to be closed, this leaves the drive letters mounted and requires manual dismount. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay so I thought maybe this is this server so we will try on a Win 7 x64 machine same exact results. Now if i have a backup set that has less than the available drive letters lets say 18, the GRO works fine from the Win 7/2008 box. So then I further tested on the Win 7 machine from a Client using 2003 sbs Server, (different backup source, OS, and bit) Same problem occurred with the drive letter limitation. If I do this on a Win XP machine with more than available drive letters (30 incrementals) from the 2003 SBS clients the problem does not exist and GRO works great. Problem is that if the exchange source on the backup was done on a 2007 or 2010 exchange then the version has to be 64 bit thus we need to use Win 7/2008 x64 to do the restore. So now we are S.O.L with this product on newer server implementations. I am hoping that someone has some incite other than don't do incrementals beyond the number of drive letters available because this is just absurd. Was this product ever tested properly in x64 incremental implementations beyond 22 days at Symantec...?Solved901Views3likes4CommentsExchange 2007 non-GRT Backup is 22x times faster than GRT backup
I'm using the following: Backup Exec 12.5for Windows with Service Pack 3installed (incl the latest hotfixes) Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 All servers have Gbit NICs connected to Gigabit swithes Exchange 2007Service Pack 2+Rollup 1 The Exchange Information Store is about 10GBin size An Exchange GRTbackup has an averagethroughput of 82MB/min (and thus takes about 2hours to complete). An Exchange non-GRTbackup has an average throughput of 1817MB/min (and takes only 6minutes to complete). Ifind theperformance of the GRTbackup (which is 22x times slower) unacceptable. While investigating the cause, Inoticed the following behaviour of Backup Exec: A snapshot is created using the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0 (Version 1.0.0.7). The data in the snapshot is accessed on the Exchange server by the BEREMOTE.EXEprocess. The BEREMOTE.EXEprocess on the Exchange server sents the data over a TCPconnection to the BEREMOTE.EXEprocess on the Backup server The data is sent in chunks of 64KB which takes about 1.2milliseconds The client then has to wait for about 40milliseconds for a response from the server, before it can sent the next chunk of 64KB. Since the ethernet protocol has an MTUof 1500bytes, it has to sent the data in several smaller packages (44x 1460data bytes) The 44 packages are all sent within 1.2ms, and then it takes 40milliseconds (and sometimes even more) before it can sent the next chunk. The Backup Server writes the data to files in an IMGxxxxxxx folder as a subfolder in the Backup-to-disk location. The files in the IMGxxxxxxx folderare a 1:1 replica of the snapshot data. The slowness is due to a 'bug' in the BEREMOTE.EXE Iverified this by accessing the above Snapshot using the MKLINK.EXEcommand (see http://blogs.msdn.com/adioltean/archive/2008/02/28/a-simple-way-to-access-shadow-copies-in-vista.aspxfor details) The copy of the same data over the network to the same harddisk location using Windows built-in COPY (or XCOPY) command took proceeded at a rate of about 250Mbps a second over the SMB protocol). When performing a NON-GRTbackup, the client does not have to wait 40milliseconds, but can simply continue to sent the data in one large data-stream and the server seems to handle this correctly. For the NON-GRTbackup the 'TCP Receive Window' always remains 64240bytes and therefore the client keeps sending data. For the GRT-enabled backup: the 'TCPReceive Window' decreases for every TCP-ACKsent, until it's too small, and therefore the client has to stop. After the described timeout of +/- 40milliseconds, the server sends a 'TCPWindowUpdate' to the client (a reset of the TCPReceive Window to 64240bytes) after which the client immediately start sending its data to the client. The actualthroughput is not limitedby the network, but is actually limited by the design of the GRT-backup. It therefore suffers from the following disadvantages: The network is kept busy for an extended period, and therefore the risk of job failure due to network interruptions increases accordingly. The remote agent on the client is kept busy for an extended period The snapshot is kept online for an extended period, putting an additional load on the server +additional disk space on a heavily used server. How comes the client may not keep sending it's data (or why is the Window Size decreased for GRTbackup, while it's not decreased for non-GRT backup)? Is Backup Exec analyzing the contents of the Information Store on-the-fly while it's receiving the data? It seems to me that it only processes the data once that all data has been transferred, because only after all data has finished, it creates an IMGxxxxxx\vdb_date_time subfolder with some additional data in it. However I'm not sure about this. If Backup Exec is not processing the contents on-the-fly: why is the transfer taking so long? If Backup Exec does process the data on-the fly: wouldn't it be better to process the contents AFTERalldata has been transferred? This design would solve the above disadvantages, and it would make more sense if the job details would show: 6minutes required to transfer +114 minutes required to extract individual messages. In case some technician is interested: IhaveNetwork Traces (wireshark)of the above behaviour, in case it cannot be reproduced. Kind regards, br_nar2.7KViews3likes5CommentsBackup duplicate to tape
Hi, Wehave installed BE 12.5 in a new installed server. Nowwe're doing Exchange 2007 B2D using CPS, and schedule for full backup to run in scheduled time. B2D runs fine, but when another job runs to duplicate it to tape, it goes all OK until around 2GB before finishing. It stucks there for around 2 hrs, than it continues. Now it verifies the backup, it again stuck a bit before finishing, and only changes state between QUEUED, and Loading Tape. We're using HPLTO4 brand new Tape Drive. Thank you for any help.158Views3likes1Comment
