Symantec System Recovery 2013 - restore to new VM
We're running Symantec System Recovery 2013 on Windows Server 2012. It's scheduled to create recovery point sets with a "full" backup once a week, then "incremental" ones in between. That's all working fine, and we can restore individual files from the backups with no problems. However, we'd also like this to work as a form of disaster recovery, in that if the building were to burn down, we'd like to be able to restore an offsite copy of the latest recovery point to a new virtual machine at a datacentre. I've been testing this process by creating a new VM, and booting with the Symantec Recovery DVD to perform the restore. Although the restore process runs to completion, there seems to be a problem with drivers, and the newly-created VM doesn't boot properly to Windows. The "Restore Anywhere" feature of Symantec System Recovery 2013 is definitely enabled. The newly-created VM gets most of the way through the initial boot process but, before the logon screen is reached, an alert box appears "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware". I'm using the latest version of Oracle Virtualbox for the VM host, with default virtual hardware, which normally Windows Server 2012 supports with no problems. I've also tried using a virtual IDE drive or virtual SCSI drive for my VM, instead of the default SATA virtual hardware. The original physical server has an Fujitsu SAS 6Gb/s RAID 5/6 512MB (D2616) Adapter and a RAID-5 array. I've also tried using the feature built in to Symantec System Recovery which allows the conversion of the latest recovery point to a VHD file. I've tried the file it creates both with Virtualbox and with "proper" Hyper-V running under Windows Server 2012 R2, and in both cases I get the same error message when the VM boots. I'm not clear why this isn't working - any ideas, please? I'm assuming it's something to do with mass storage drivers, but perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree?Solved4.8KViews1like11CommentsRestore physical Windows machine in VMware using System recovery 2013

Hello, We have inherited a Server running ESXI Free and a single VM with Server 2012R2 -Recognizing the limitations inherent in the Free Edition in terms of protecting the ESXI, is at least possible to install 2013R2 w/in the Virtual Machine and successfully back it up to external storage for DR Consideration? -Model would be if total server failure at least 2012 Server can be saved and restored to different machine via V2P -Apparently VM does have standard Backup Exec on it currently that running - did not know if this would extend to 2013 R2 -Additionally to get an entire image of the machine can the entire Drive be imaged via Cold Boot with new version of SRD Thank you very much489Views0likes1CommentBest solution to back up Citrix Xen Server
Hello, I am wondering what the best solution would be for the following: I have on Citrix Xen Server host that has 7 virtual machines on it. I am currently using PHD Virtual to back this up to a NAS. I am looking to move to different software for the backups. One of the virtual machines is running SQL and one is running AD and DNS. There is also one physical server that has AD, DNS, and DHCP on it that i would also like to back up in the same solution. What i was curious about is what is the best way to back all of this up? Is it Back Up Exec or System Restore? Or would neither work? I am looking for something that will back up to the existng NAS and allow for item level restores as well as fast restores of full VM's if ever needed. Second question is, assuming one of the two products will work is it best practice to install it on its own server or could it be installed on teh physical that is existing with AD, DNS and DHCP? I am assuming its own server and that is what i would shoot for, but for the sake of saving money i like to know my options. Thank you for your assistance.Solved1.2KViews0likes2CommentsUEFI bios & GPT disk P2V failed with SSR 2013 R2
Hi I tried to covert my physical server(X3650m4 + win2012)to virtual server(hyper-v) by SSR 2013 R2. The covert process worked, but when the virtual serverbooted, it failed. I wonder if SSR 2013 R2 support P2V for the server withUEFI bios &GPT disk. Thank you.789Views0likes4CommentsServer 2012R2 Hyper-V Host Backup and Restore Process
Running Server 2012R2 and using Hyper-V for multiple guest VMs. An additional networkedserver isavailable for storage of backups. What is the best practice (or KB article)for using System Recovery 2013R2 (Server Edition)to backup and restoreguest VMs on 2012R2 Hyper-V? 1. Do you install SSR 2013R2 on each of the guest VMs and schedule incrementalOR VHD(x) backups of each guest? 2. Or...do you ONLY install SSR on the host and backup the entire host incrementally and if you need a guest VM retrieve it via SSR brower? How would you go about restoring in the event of a Hyper-V host or guest failure? Is SSR even the appropriate software to be using in my case?Solved897Views0likes3CommentsP2V Windows 2000 machine with SCSI drive to Hyper-V
I typically use Symantec System Recovery to do P2V of older machines and had a very high success rate, but this one is getting the best of me. Clone/white box Windows 2000 SP4 1GB RAM Symbios SCSI adapter Single 36GB drive - there are bad sectors Only reason I need to keep the machine is for the old security controller software - vendor is MIA When I use SSR 8.5.7 I get what seems to be a good image, but the resulting VM won't start. It says "Inaccessible boot device". I thought SSR put in the correct drivers, but I think I have always done IDE drives in the past which might be more forgiving. Tried using SSR P2V with and without the mini setup, both yield the "Inaccessible boot device". Is there something else I can use to do a P2V? Or maybe something else I can do with SSR? I am certainly open to suggestions as I want to get rid of this machine ASAP.697Views0likes1Comment
