Failure occurred querying the Writer status

Hello,

I am consistently getting failed backups with the error message: "A failure occurred querying the Writer status." This is a Windows Server 2008 machine with Exchange 2007 and Backup Exec 2012. The failure is occuring on a job which writes data to a HP Tape Drive.

The job log provides the following information:

V-79-57344-65233 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "\\SERVER2\Microsoft Information ...

Snapshot technology error (0xE000FED1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

Writer Name: Exchange Server, Writer ID: {76FE1AC4-15F7-4BCD-987E-8E1ACB462FB7}, Last error: The VSS...

If I click on the link to V-79-57344-65233 I get several options to try; the one closest to mine references exchange and the information store (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH142957&actp=search&viewlocale=en_...) The article wanted me to do the following, which I did:
- I did an Un-mount and re-mount the information store databases
- I Restarted the Exchange information store
- I checked the list of writers with 'vssadmin list writers' command and got this:

- I was unable to determine if I had any orphaned snapshots using the 'vssadmin list shadows' command. Here is the output (it's long - I'll put it at the end of the discussion)

I am getting the following Event viewer events

MSExchangeIS, Event ID 9814, Exchange VSS Writer
Exchange VSS Writer (instance 436664f7-0823-444d-8ffa-1637ec68b303:12) failed with error code -2403 when preparing the database engine for backup of storage group 'First Storage Group'.

MSExchangeIS, Event ID 9609, Exchange VSS Writer
Exchange VSS Writer (instance 436664f7-0823-444d-8ffa-1637ec68b303:12) failed with error code -2403 when preparing for Snapshot.

MSExchangeIS, Event ID 9840, General
An attempt to prepare the storage group 'First Storage Group' for backup failed because the storage group is already in the process of being backed up. The error code is -2403. (Note that if a backup was recently aborted, then it may take several minutes for the system to detect the aborted backup and initiate backup cleanup procedures, so this message may be generated if an attempt was made to backup a storage group before a previous backup attempt had fully terminated.)

I suppose at this stage I'm at a loss as to where to go next; and so any help is very greatly appreciated!

Exchange 2007 backups have to use the VSS writers to complete. As you are getting the vss error about exchange in event viewer the exchange logs needs to be checked. Check for exchange logs for any error?

Most of the times it is an issue with MS Exchange where you have to check the consistency check for the exchange database files.

Also make sure none of them is the issue?

1> Make sure no other backup is happening from other software

2> At the time of backup MS exchange maintenace is not running

3> Is some other logging enabled on exchange.

4> Try restarting the exchange services

5>  Last but not the least -> rebooting the server

Note:If above doesn't resolve open a call with MS not with Symantec

Yes, I have used the LiveUpdate function from Backup Exec file menu to ensure it is up to date.  And I just applied the latest update rollup from Microsoft for Exchange.

VSS errors can be so ambiguous.

Is this a full backup? Is there any Exchange Maintenance running?

Try running a separate backup for each storage group

• in the Job properties under the Advanced Open File Option
• select the checkbox to use the Advanced Open File Option
• select the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service and the Snapshot provider: System - Use Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
• check the checkbox for Process logical volumes for backup one at a time. 

After the job runs check for errors in the Exchange server's Windows events for the time the job ran.

I'm not entirely sure what resolved the issue but I recieved some error messages in event viewer regarding CAP12 which is in relation to VSS.  I followed this article and as of now, the issue seems to be resolved: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272
Now onto the other issues :)!
