I have moved this to a separate discussion because it is not related to the original discussion.

The default OPP is always 4 weeks.  In BE 2010, by default all media is associated with a media set with an OPP of 4 weeks.

What you can do is to associate the media with another media set with the OPP that you want, or in your job, target the media set that you have set up with an appropriate OPP, rather than accept the default.

Hi PKH

Thanks for your help again!!!

When I insert a new tape to the tape drive

For monthly backup tape

1. insert a new tape to the tape drive

2. Label the tape

3. associate the tape to monthly backup media set (AP: 1 year, OPP 0.5 year)

e.g AP begin at Jan 2012 , the tape can be recycle at Jul 2013  <---- is this correct?

For half year backup tape

1. insert a new tape to the tape drive

2. Label the tape

3. associate the tape to monthly backup media set (AP: 3 year, OPP 3 year)

e.g AP begin at Jan 2012 , the tape can be recycle at Jan 2018  <---- is this correct?

Are both tape operation procedure correct? Thanks!

Do not associate the tapes with the media set. Otherwise, it will assume OPP and AP immediately.  Leave them in the scratch media set.

AP begin at Jan 2012 , the tape can be recycle at Jul 2013

No.  OPP begins from the end of the last job that writes to the tape.  If you have a job appending to the tape in Jun 2013, then it will only be overwritable in Jan 2014. Likewise, for your other tape.

Hi pkh

For a new tape insert to tape drive, the tape will belongs to scratch media set by default?

After run the 1st backup job with the tape, it will associate to the monthly backup job media set automatically according the backup job?

Assume

AP: 1 year

OPP: 0.5 year

If 1st backup job run on 01 Jan 2012, the last backup job run on 01 Dec 2012 & no job appending from 02 Dec 2012.

AP period will expiry on 31 Dec 2012???

OPP will begin from 02 Dec 2012 to 01 Jun 2012 & the tape can be overwritable on 02 Jun 2014?

Yes and Yes

For your calculations -

APP is calculated from the time the tape is Overwritten, so the last Append possible would be 01 Jan 2013

OPP is calculated from the time of the last data written, so the OPP will end 1 July 2013

Hi Ken

That means labeling is the only action for the new tape?

Hi Ken

I just checked the admin guide.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC5211

Refer to P.373

When you install Backup Exec, a default media set named Keep Data for 4Weeks
is created. Be default, all of the media that you use for the backup jobs that you
create are automatically associated with the media set Keep Data for 4 Weeks
.

Not scratch media set for new tape by default?

All media must be associated with a media set.  By default, unless you create your own, the " Keep Data for 4Weeks" will be used when writing data

When you inventory a new tape (not known to this BE system) or when you erase a tape, it is associated with the scratch media set, meaning any job calling out any media set can overwrite it

You can create your own media sets (as many different ones as you need to manage your data) and use them for any appropriate job
