...make sure your VSS writers are set to Automatic and then try again.
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the reply,
If you are talking about the services, then yes they are set to automatic.

No, within BE itself under Advanced Open File Option, you can set this to Automatic.

AOFO is not enabled.

What is the OS and version of Exchange ?
What Event ID is logged on the Exchange server during the backup failure ?
Are all VSS writers in a stable state post the backup failure ? Is the Exchange VSS writer listed when vssadmin list writers command is run ?
Do ensure no other backup or Shadow Copies or Exchange Maintenance is running during the BE backup.

You might want to upgrade to BE 2010 R3 with the latest service pack. I used to get a lot of VSS errors with the previous 2 versions of BE 2010. No guarantee it will work, but it was the last version of 2010 and in my mind the most stable.
You can use your current licenses too, and you can download the ISO from the link below:

Stop the BE services, grab copies of the Data/Catalogs folders, and then run the upgrade.
Post back with an update. By the way, if you're using Windows Server 2008 R2 and up don't reregister the VSS writers as MS don't recommend this. I used to do it with no ill effect, but eventually also stopped doing it and recommending it. Windows Server 2003 R2 used to have the VSS Rollup Patch which worked well.
Thanks!
