Netbackup Migrator, able to un-migrate from tape back to disk?

Greg_Hoffman

We had previously used the Netbackup (NBU) Migrator to migrate from disk to tape. We now want to un-migrate that data back to disk. Is this possible?

We're running EV 7.0.5 currently. Thanks in advance.

BTW, that was only a semi serious suggestion... the only correct way is to manually restore the CAB files from tape

You should be able to use Uncollect.exe

  • Once collections are "turned on" for a Vault Store partition, it cannot be "turned off". To discontinue the use of collections, you will need to open a new Vault Store Partition. To extract the DVS files from the CAB files, a utility named uncollect.exe must be utilized.

Thanks for the response. We don't need to extract from cab files necessarily, we just need to get all items that were migrated to tape restored from tape to disk. At that point they can be collected or not. So if I'm misunderstanding what you're saying just let me know. Otherwise I'm not sure that uncollect.exe will help here.

We've opened a case with support and so far they don't think there is any way to do this. I'm surprised to hear that since we can't be the only ones who have this need.

Also, correction we're running 8.0.5 currently.

the only way you can do it is to manually restore the CAB files from tape then change some of the SQL entries, its not a particularly good position to be in unfortunately, its for that reason alone as to why i could never recommend that kind of migration to anyone

I agree, I never recommend migration of cab files.  As for getting everything back, I would think you could also use uncollect.exe and then re-run collection.  It would be a pain but I don't think there are many options for you at this point.

The problem is, is that UnCollect.exe will only run against CAB files on an NTFS/CIFS drive as opposed to something thats migrated to tape, and the only thing that will recall a CAB file will be StorageOffline, you could theoretically rebuild every single index there is, which will recall every CAB file from tape and then once you have gotten all the CAB files back, you can then change the SQL possibly or try running the uncollect and see if it will work

I didn't remember that being the case with Uncollect.exe but if that is the case then a manual restore it should be.  Probably would be faster in the long run and since they still want the cab files makes more sense anyway.
