Vault Cache and .ost files

Hi,

my customer has a concern regarding where Vault Cache is saved. He believes that it is saved in the .ost files which will greatly impact performance. I explained that it is actually stored in a different location and that the .ost file will only contain shortcuts. but he wishes to see an official document from symantec that clearly states that. I have checked the administration, installation and performance guides but cant find anything that clearly states where the vault cache is stored and how is it accessed from outlook. could someone please tell me where I could find it and on what page?

also, he wants to know if the end user and not the administrator could select the path to store the vault cache.

So the default location is the Enterprise Vault subfolder in the user's Application Data folder.  You can change it by setting it to a different location as described here.

Root folder (Exchange Vault Cache setting)

One correction, the vault cache contains the archived item, not the shortcuts.  The shortcuts will be in the OST.

Just to add a little more info on this, as it stated, it doesn't affect pre-existing users which are enabled for VC, however if you reset VC for a user, it will use the new Root Path.
