Recover one or 100 virtual machines with bulk instant recovery for VMware

Most modern enterprises tend to be heavily virtualized, from hundreds of Virtual Machines (VMs) on-premises to thousands of VMs blended between clouds and the data center. The ability to spin up VMs on the fly, in contrast to the traditional process of provisioning physical servers, has led to some amount of VM sprawl, creating gaps in enterprise data protection and availability. When it comes to protecting VMware, NetBackup provides unmatched versatility and value for the level of automation, orchestration, unmatched performance, and deep VMware integration, all wrapped up in a comprehensive, yet simple data protection platform.

As VMs multiply, and the amount of data in the enterprise grows from terabytes to petabytes and beyond, efficiency in data protection becomes critical. NetBackup innovations like agentless backups combined with NetBackup Accelerator for VMware, that uses Change Block Tracking (CBT) data from VMware have greatly reduced the backup window down to minutes versus hours. While Instant Access features allow a VM to be brought online without the need for provisioning storage, this process is still not the fastest when performing bulk recovery operations. Should ransomware compromise a VM environment and take offline hundreds or thousands of VMs, customers need a robust solution that can recover VMs at scale from backup copies and onto the production datastore.

Introducing Instant Recovery for VMware in NetBackup 9.1! By using the backup image to generate a live representation of the data that corresponds to a specific recovery point, NetBackup utilizes VMware CBT data to identify the differences between blocks in the recovery point and the current VM and sends just the unique blocks needed to roll back the running VM. The whole process completes in a significantly reduced duration of time – in the order of seconds versus minutes.

The VMware administrator may utilize self-service capabilities in NetBackup to orchestrate these operations – using just three clicks for a hundred VMs in each rollback submission when using the UI – select the VMs you wish to recover and press the button “Rollback Instantly”. See Figure 1. The next couple of clicks are to identify the recovery point we wish to roll back to, and final confirmation changes are rolled back to the production VM. See Figure 2.

VM recovery at scale can also be automated using custom data protection workflows that consume NetBackup API.
