Veritas™ System Recovery 22 list of files copied or with errors

Josedelatorrem

Dear all,

We have a prospective partner looking for a data protection solution. It is a requirement having a report or a log file able to show the list of files backed up in every job and in case of any error, shows the files didn't back up and the reason.

Do we provide with System Recovery this level o details in general or just in one case? Please specify.

Best regards,

Jose de la Torre.

"Backing up files and folders" is a function of individual files and folders. However, Admin guide Page 168 says like below.

===================
Note: The file and folder backup is intended for less than 10,000 files. If the data
to be backed up exceeds this amount, Veritas strongly recommends to use the
drive-based backup
===================

Admin guide says that less than 10,000 files but I actually recommend it should be less than 1,000 files.
It is because the backup performance for "Backing up files and folders" is very slow due to the file version management and incremental / encryption functions. To back up entire volume, we strongly recommend the drive-based backup.

In addition, VSR does not have a feature to report the backed up file list like Backup Exec even if it is "Backing up files and folders". If the customer gives up the reporting function, VSR (drive-based backup) is fast and a good solution.

Unfortunately VSR did not have a feature to report the list of files that are backed up.
VSR backs up the volumes with not file level but sector level.
So VSR does not have the individual file level information after the job finishes.
Of course, users can check the backed up file names or file contents on File Explorer after mounting recovery point files.

On the other hand, Backup Exec which is a backup software with file level, will meet the customer's expectations.
That is, Backup Exec has a feature to report the list of files that are backed up in joblog files by adjusting the log level.

Thanks akihiro1,

You're abs right about using Backup Exec, but this partner is focus in very small customers with just 1 server and 14 PCs . That's why we are looking at VSR.

I have seen in the User's Guide of VSR v2 that there is a feature for "Backing up files and folders", so I was assuming a new file level backup was included, is that correct?

See the guide below in the link below:
