Didn't need to modify SQL as I re-used the drive letter, so as far as SQL was concerned it was the same, even though it was a new LUN. I will try stopping the services first. This does make sense. Thanks

Thanks for the info guys. I'm sure it would have been helpful if I mentioned my on-premise exchange environment is only 2003. Sorry 'bout that. I will look into a recipient policy which deletes mail items - something I hadn't considered.

The mailbox has previously been migrated to O365 mailbox. If I rehydrate into the original mailbox then migrate to the O365 archive, the already migrated mail ends up in the archive too - this is why I need to empty the mailbox before rehydration.
