Introducing Veritas Operations Manager 5.0 and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 5.0

Over the past year, many technology conferences discussed about explosive data growth. If you attended some, you’ve probably seen the quote that “the growth of data is 40% to 60% over the next two years1” multiple times up on the big screen. True enough, this problem warrants a storage solution that can keep up with data growth while minimizing the risk of unexpected errors or downtime and managing diversity in the data center.

Every IT vendor is trying to tackle this problem and the other challenges that come into play in storage and availability management:

  • Increased expectations to be up and running 24x7
  • Complexity and diversity with array vendors, applications and platforms
  • Low storage utilization rate
  • Introduction of new technologies

Let’s take the example of new technologies, such as the private cloud and virtualization. If you are planning to implement private clouds, complexity has to be minimized in order to implement an elastic and self provisioned data center. Furthermore by virtualizing your environment, you take physical assets and transform it to virtual – good for proponents of “green IT” by reducing energy costs- but now you have to contend with virtual machines (vmdk) files clogging up your storage.

Here at Symantec, we continue to address all these challenges through our centralized management platform solutions: Veritas Operations Manager and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced, rated as a Leader in Gartner’s 2012 Magic Quadrant for Storage Resource Management. Today, we are announcing the 5.0 version of Veritas Operations Manager and Veritas Operations Manager Advanced.

Veritas Operations Manager is a storage and availability resource management solution for virtual, physical, and private cloud environments for Veritas Storage Foundation, Veritas Cluster Server, Veritas Dynamic Multi-Pathing and Symantec ApplicationHA environments to help you optimize your data center assets. With Veritas Operations Manager, you can centralize visibility and control, ensure availability, scale operations, increase storage utilization, and maintain compliance.

Veritas Operation Manager Advanced is a premium offering on top of Veritas Operations Manager that supports agentless deployment, provides chargeback and customizable reports, and also works across multiple data centers and native operating system platforms. With Veritas Operations Manager Advanced, you can report across multiple data centers from one central location and customize and group reports according to your business needs in order to accelerate operations. You can not only identify storage waste but also remediate from Veritas Storage Foundation hosts to control costs.

Battling virtualization and other new technologies

The challenge that comes with the proliferation of platforms, thin and virtualization technologies is that customers want to match the application’s needs with the appropriate server and storage platform, but at the same time a multi-vendor environment increases the complexity. Customers are faced with issues mapping the logical and physical relationships in an increasingly complex data center. All these lead to high operational costs.

Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 5.0 provides virtualization storage discovery. You can identify unused, zombie vmdk files through a built-in reclamation report. Additionally, you can create a virtual machine chargeback report that is aware of thin provisioning at the VMware and array levels, the vmdk type – flat, sparse, or raw– and the storage technology being used.

Automating operations to combat complexity

Since its first version, Veritas Operations Manager Advanced allows you to create global, customizable reports of data center resources across multiple business units, accelerating operations and getting rid of spreadsheets. Taking it to the next level, Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 5.0 uses an assignment engine that has a rule-driven business view, which is a container of hierarchies in which you can assign assets, such as arrays, hosts, file systems, and others. This feature automatically updates existing business views with assets. Hence, you don’t need to do manual work for assigning assets.

Completing the whole picture

So far in the product’s lifecycle, we have provided not only reporting but also the ability to take action to optimize data center operations in one console. Veritas Operations Manager 5.0 enabled targeted reclamation through reports showing customers which thin pools, hosts or file systems are best to target. Reclamation can be resource intensive so we discovered that most customers are very conservative in using it; they do not know how much space they can really reclaim. Now, you can find out how much space can be reclaimed and the ability to target reclamation.

Veritas Operations Manager 5.0 also offers an application availability dashboard, which gives visibility into different applications discovered from physical or virtual machines and ApplicationHA on multi-vendor virtualization technologies. By using the dashboard, you can assess the risks of performing maintenance and track the status of applications moving across virtual servers.

Finally, Veritas Operations Manager Advanced 5.0 allows you to plan for your capacity needs by forecasting your storage consumption and helping you figure out when you will run out of storage.
