Netbackup Appliance support for VPC (Virtual Port Channel
Hi, We have new Network infratructure being implemented where the traditional method of stacking switches to allow us to LACP across multiple switches, has been replaced with a new NEXUS 9000 setup which now uses something call VPC (Virtual Port Channelling). I dont know much about this but have been asked by the Technical Architects to confirm that the VPC is supported by the Netbackup appliances? Our appliances are 5230 at version 2.6.0.2 (7.6.0.2) Hopefully someone has come across this before and can help ? A quick question about using NetBackup with compressed SQL Server backups. Our backups infrastructure consists of NetBackup v7.6 and NetBackup 5230 appliances. Our SQL server estate is a mixture of SQL Server versions 2005-2012 on Windows 2003-2012. We've noticed that the deduplication ratio (as reported by backup jobs in Netbackup Activity Monitor) for compressed SQL backups is 0% (we experimented with the NetBackup SQL Agent and alsostandard flat file backups). Now we weren't expecting to get much deduplication out of a compressed SQL Server backup - but it was a suprise to get nothing at all. Previous tests performed on other deduplication platforms(Exagrid and Windows native 2012 deduplication) showed that a noticeable (albeit muchlower rate compared with uncompressed backups)deduplication level of about4:1 was possible withcompressed SQL Server backups. So my question is - is this a configuration issue on our NetBackup infrastructure - or is there a technical\designreason why thededuplication of compressed SQL Server backups is not available inNetBackup? I'm trying to configure LDAP on a NetBackup Appliance via the commandline. I go to Settings > Security > Authentication > ActiveDirectory > Configure, but the username I'm using has special characters in it (the "dash" or "minus" symbol). So for example, the username is "netbackup-admin". The Appliance apparently doesn't like special characters in the username. Is there a way to escape the character? I've tried using single/double quotations, forward/back slashes etc but no go. Is there no other way other than changing the username? I have a question regarding data flow in the following environment: 3 sites, each a seperate NBU domain with a 5230 appliance and multiple windows servers (2K8R2 & 2K12R2) I use AIR to replicate backups between the sites 1 scenario is as follows: Step 1 Exchange DAG backed up to 5230 in site A Step 2 Backup replicated to 5230 in site B Step 3 Replicated copy imported into 5230 in site B Each of the above steps runs successfully and the backup is available for restore in site A and site B as expected. Here is the question: Whilst step 3 (Import) is taking place on the 5230 in site B I am seeing a lot of network traffic between the 5230 in site B and the exchange server (where the backup originated) in site A !! Surely there should be NO communication between the appliance in site B and 'anything' in order to perform an import of a replicated backup image ? If anything traffic between the appliances, but not back to the originating client ? What am I missing here ? AJ842Views0likes7CommentsBackup all Hyper-V guest machines on a host
We have NetBackup 7.6.1.1 Appliance based infrastructure. I would like to add all Hyper-V VMs to NBU policy so that we don’t have to select the guests indovidually. For example, If a guest is added on Hyper-V which is already being backed-up thought NBU, could that guest automatically be part of the backup? Like we are able to do with VMware inNBU. Question 1: For Hyper-V hosts to be added to the backup policy, is there a way to add all VMs residing on that Hyper-V server instead of adding the hosted VMs individually on the policy? The following steps I have taken from Symantec technote for Hyper-V backups; 11. Using the clients tab we can add the virtual machines for backup. 12. On the Backup Selections tab, Select ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES. This is the only backup selection which is supported for the backup of Hyper-V virtual machines. Question 2: This ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES -> is it for Hyper-V or for the VMs?Solved561Views0likes1CommentAudit - Who changed what policies and when
We are running NBU Appliance based environment ver 2.6.1.1 and NBU ver. 7.6.1.1. We are required to enable auditing to capture who changed what policies and when. We also have OpsCenter Analytics that I am sure can possible be useful. Appreciate your help with what is required to be done to achieve the above without overloading the Master server with audit logs?Solved2.1KViews0likes4CommentsNetbackup Appliance 2.6.1.1 Mail Issues FIXED
The Mail Issues that everyone is having with netbackup appliance is fixed in 2.6.1.1, but 2.6.1.2 breaks the email fix. Has anyone else experience this Has stated in their release notes SMTP server settings for appliance notifications Starting with NetBackup Appliance 2.6.1.1, all email notifications that get generated by the appliance use the same SMTP settings. These emails include hardware monitoring notifications and NetBackup job notifications. The configuration settings are located under Settings > Notification > Alert Configuration in the NetBackup Appliance Web Console or Main_Menu > Settings > Alerts in the NetBackup Appliance Shell Menu. These settings override any previous SMTP setup you may have previously used to send NetBackup job notifications. Note: If you had already configured the appliance SMTP settings before you upgraded to NetBackup Appliance 2.6.1.1, you may need to re-save the configuration in order for NetBackup to use it. In the NetBackup Appliance Web Console, go to Settings > Notification > Alert Configuration and click Save. Or in the NetBackup Appliance Shell Menu, go to Main_Menu > Settings > Alerts and resubmit the SMTP and SenderID settings.776Views0likes0CommentsNetbackup Appliance Administration
This is a pretty baasci question, I just want to make sure I am doing this right. I am new to Netbackup appliances. I have a Netbackup 5230 appliance that is setup as the master server, and another one that will be at a different site, also server as a separate master server. Is the best way to administer the jobs policiesto use Remote Admin Console on anadmin server/machine?719Views0likes2CommentsUpgrade operating system for Symantec Appliance 5220
Our Information Security team, as per the annual audit, scanned the hosts for vulnerability and found that the OS on these appliance is very old - scan output message says, "Unsupported Unix Operating System". Lack of support implies that no new security patches for the product will be released by the vendor. As a result, it is likely to contain security vulnerabilities. Question: We have upgraded the Appliance to version 2.6.1.1, however that does not upgrade the underlying OS. Is there any technote from Symantec supporting that OS shall remain the same or plans on upgrading the Appliance OS etc. in detail? Thanks All.Solved1.2KViews0likes5Comments
