Netbackup Appliances 5230 with PureDisk: How many streams?
Hi all, We recently migrated to Netbackup Appliances running Netbackup 7.6.0.1 (Appliance version 2.6.0.1 ) We are running 2 appliances per site, each site is its own NBU domain (We use AIR to replicate). Each appliance is configured with a 70TB PureDisk volume. We are quite new to PureDisk that is running on these systems, but at this moment they are limited to 80 streams maximum in the diskpool object (Which seems pretty low to me) At the moment we are running out of resources due to this maximum that has been set. What is the maximum streamcount a 5230 Appliance PureDisk can safely handle? Note that we are using AIR to replicate all our images, but replication is being done during the day, not during backup times... Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!1KViews1like2CommentsMSDP encryption (ServerOptions=agent_crypt) (or should it be =encrypt)
Hi Forum, Page 30 of the NetBackup Deduplication Guide v7.5 says that... by default MSDP encryption is disabled by default, but they it is recommended by Symantec. Page 70 says that to enable encryption that we need to add "agent_crypt" to "ServerOptions=" in the ContentRouter.cfg file. But looking at the comments in the file: ; [no]agent_crypt : always disable/enable client-side encryption; ; [no]encrypt : always disable/enable encryption; ...indicates that using "agent_crypt" instructs the client-side deduplication agent to encrypt data. At our site we are not implementing client side deduplication so it woudl seem to me that setting :agent_crypt" won't have any effect. My questions are: 1) Is "agent_crypt" really the option to use if what we are trying to achieve is encryption of the post-dedupe blocks on teh MSDP data storage local to teh MSDP media server? 2) What does the "ServerOptions=encrypt" option do, and how is it different to "agent_crypt" ? 3) If we can determine which option really does enable post-dedupe encryption - then does anyone know what the CPU overhead is ? 4) Are there any particular models of CPU (SPARC or Intel or AMD) that implement the encryption/decryption in their hardware instruction sets - i.e. are there any CPUs that are much better suited for use with MSDP encryption ? Hi Forum - I've read elsewhere that is is recommended to format the NFTS volumes that will be used to house the MSDP database and MSDP data with a cluster size of 64 KB (i.e. 128 traditional 512 byte sectors). However if if look at a slightly populated MSDP server, I see most files are less than 64 KB. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Top folders with files... We need to switch our backup SAN from Pillar (SAN01) to EMC (SAN02). I was wondering if we could de-assign a LUN from a SAN (just said SAN01) on media server (just said media01). And then assign a new LUN from another SAN (just said SAN02) on the media server media01. We do not remove the images of media01 from the old LUN from SAN01 on the master server. Then we use the new LUN on the SAN02 for a week. Then we need to restore something from the old LUN on SAN01. Can we unassigned the LUN from SAN02 and re-assign the LUN from SAN01 on media01 and be able to restore it ? thanks877Views1like4CommentsAdding a New Media server to Deduplication
Hi, I'm not sure if this is related to NetBackup or Puredisk... Here is my setup: One NetBackup Master Server 7.0 One PDDO server (PDOS 6.6) Media server used for deduplication is the master itself, and it's causing a lot cpu usage... That's why we have decided to add a new media server for deduplication... Installa NetBackup 7.0 to that server as media server. When i try to choose new media server on "Media and Device Management" -> "Credentials" -> "Storage Servers" -> pddo.local (Change) -> "Login Credentials" It gives the following error: "Add credentials failed for media server/s: media_server: Unknown error(-1)" What i need to know is, am i missing something before that step? How can i add a new media server to use for deduplication on the same server and same disk pool, or is it even possible? Do i need to re-create all of "Storage unit", "Disk pool" and "Storage server"???265Views1like0CommentsPureDisk Server Questions (NetBackup Client, PDDO, Replication, Recovery)
A year ago, I posted a comment stating that we were looking for the best deduplication technology to fit our needs. As we initially thought, there is no single solution that can provide datacenter and remote office deduplication effectively. As it stands now, we are implementing datadomain for our datacenters, and PureDisk for our remote offices. Now that we are doing this, I have a few questions: 1. Because we will have two deduplication solutions in play, bandwidth considerations continue to come to the forefront. What are the +/- of loading a NetBackup client on the PureDisk Servers and backing it up like a regular client and then sending the replicated data across the pipe with all the other data being sent between the DataDomain appliances? There would definitely be some bandwidth savings resulting from less congestion, but what are the gotcha's? 2. I am wanting to be clear on PDDO between NetBackup 6.5 and 7.0. On versions earlier that NetBackup 7.0, if we incorporate PDDO, the deduplication would no longer be client-side deduplication, but instead be target based...meaning all the data would be sent across the WAN....not good....so we would need to leave the PureDisk environment separate from NetBackup until we update to 7.0 where we can choose between target and source based deduplication....is this correct? If this is correct, then what are the implications implementing PDDO once we get to NetBackup 7.0377Views1like1Comment
