How to zone Vmware Datastore LUN to Backup Host
Dear Experts Master Server : Windows Media Server ( acting as appliance 5230 as well) : Linux Storage : Hitachi HUS Array Vmware backup failing with status 23 ( policy set to use SAN transport mode). I have gone through few good articles , but I can't find how to zone Vmware datastore LUN to Backup host /Appliance. In the environment only backups working which are on datastore_01, but other datastores like 02 - 05 won't work , failed with status 23. When I go on CLISH , Manage > FibreChannel > Show , I only see Device path and ID for datastore_01 only, so that tells me Datastore 02 - 05 must added here somehow, but how and from where , that is my question. In one of the article I read, below statement " Not just zoning the volumes to the appliance you need to add mapping for the volumes so that the actual datastore volumes are seen by the appliance " But how to do , what command, and from where need to do ? Please advise solution....2KViews0likes3CommentsHow to check the Backup Throughput and Performace.

Hi guys, I have a question... MyDAG enviroment is composed by three servers every node is a virtual server (VMWARE), but disks where databases (29 databases = 800 GB)are on LUMs. Netbackup enviroment:Master server is Windows 2012 and media server is 5230 appliance. Full backups are taking almost 12 hours!! Could anyone give me an idea to improve this!1.3KViews0likes5Comments2.6.1.2 Appliance VMware snapshot issue - creates but unable to delete snapshots
Recently upgraded entire environment to 7.6.1.2/2.6.1.2 from 7.6.1/2.6.1 Environment briefly: Master: Solaris 10, NetBackup 7.6.1.2 Media: 4 x 5220 Appliances, NetBackup 7.6.1.2 VMware: vCenter 4.1 So was not having issues with the vCenter 4.1 environment prior to the ugprade. But post upgrade I started getting Status 156s *after* a night of successful backups. What I have narrowed it down to is that the appliance is able to request and get a snapshot done, but when it comes time to clean up the snapshot, it fails. Strange thing is that this job completes with a Status 0 - but with the following errors: ERRORS FROM JOB DETAILS: 08/08/2015 21:56:19 - Info bpbrm (pid=4754) INF - vmwareLogger: removeVirtualMachineSnapshot: SYM_VMC_ERROR: SOAP_ERROR 08/08/2015 21:56:20 - Info bpbrm (pid=4754) INF - vmwareLogger: RegisterExtensionAPI: SYM_VMC_ERROR: SOAP_ERROR 08/08/2015 21:56:20 - Info bpbrm (pid=4754) INF - vmwareLogger: SOAP 1.1 fault: "":ServerFaultCode [no subcode] 08/08/2015 21:56:20 - Critical bpbrm (pid=4754) from client denamrd8: FTL - VMware_thaw: VMware delete snapshot failed: SYM_VMC_SOAP_ERROR 08/08/2015 21:56:20 - Critical bpbrm (pid=4754) from client denamrd8: FTL - VMware error received: Permission to perform this operation was denied. 08/08/2015 21:56:20 - Info bpfis (pid=4771) done. status: 0 08/08/2015 21:56:20 - end Application Snapshot: Delete Snapshot; elapsed time 0:00:09 ERRORS FROM LOG FILE: 11:59:51.731 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - do_thaw: Retrieving snapshots returned 0. 1 snapshots were found. 11:59:51.731 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - do_thaw: Snapshot name=NBU_SNAPSHOT densyma02p 1439401488, mor=snapshot-5265965 11:59:51.731 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: Thread <1> acquired lock in removeVirtualMachineSnapshot, level 1 11:59:51.732 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: removeVirtualMachineSnapshot: <InvalidRequestFault xmlns="urn:vim25" xsi:type="InvalidRequest"></InvalidRequestFault> 11:59:51.733 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: removeVirtualMachineSnapshot: Starting ns2:RemoveSnapshotRequestType dump. 11:59:51.733 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <ns2:RemoveSnapshotRequestType xsi:type="ns2:RemoveSnapshotRequestType"><ns2:_this xsi:type="ns2:ManagedObjectReference" type="VirtualMachineSnapshot">snapshot-5265965</ns2:_this><ns2:removeChildre n>false</ns2:removeChildren><ns2:consolidate>true</ns2:consolida 11:59:51.733 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: te></ns2:RemoveSnapshotRequestType> 11:59:51.733 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: removeVirtualMachineSnapshot: Completed ns2:RemoveSnapshotRequestType dump. 11:59:51.733 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: removeVirtualMachineSnapshot: SYM_VMC_ERROR: SOAP_ERROR 11:59:51.733 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - vmwareLogger: Thread <1> releasing lock in removeVirtualMachineSnapshot, level 1 11:59:51.733 [28259] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: INF - do_thaw: vmcRemoveSnapshot returned 6 Subsequent backups fail due to the old snapshot being orphaned. I have to manually go in and delete the orphaned snapshots, then I can get another good backup... which promptly leaves another orphaned snapshot. Support has been somewhat helpful, but at this point they are saying things point to VMware... and I don't really know where to start looking. I'm somewhat hopeful since it is easily reproducable, but since the "official" word is that 4.1 is not supported in conjuction with 7.6.1 I'm not overly confident. Anyone run into anything similar?1.7KViews0likes8CommentsP2V Coversion fails with Status 7
Greetings, I got involved with one P2V conversion issue which is segementation fault (core dumping) when executing through GUI and nbrestorevm command fails with P2V conversion job status 7. We have Appliances Based Master/Media Server running 2.6.1.2 version NetBackup. VIC (VMware Instance Converter) is on VM based Windows 2008R2 Server also running on 7.6.1.2 version NetBackup client. vSphere/vCenter is 5.5 and ESXi 5 version. Actual Physical Server is Windows 2008R2 with around 300GB of two disk volumes. I could successfully restore test VMware VM's backup and restore to verify the permission and networking setting which includes firewall setting. In this case VIC VM/Proxy was involved though. I'm suspecting 32 Bit VMware Coverter or wrong VDDK version. Let me know If you have faced similar issue and have resolved the issue or have idea about any limition on 7.6.1.2. Cheers! We mapped SAN LUNs to each appliance using single target and single initiator zoning, but for some reason the appliance is detecting over 300+ path/device/disk (/dev/sg313). We only have about 77 LUNs provisioned on our SAN, so the high counts must be representing the individual paths. The 5230 initiator ports have its own dedicated zone and not mixed up with any ESXi zone.455Views0likes2Comments/usr/openv/netbackup/online_util/fi_cntl directory - use and maintenance
This inquiry is related to my previous issue which was solved by cleaning up the aforementioned directory: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/status-42-vmware-backups-somewhat-inconsistent This discussion is to hopefully figure out HOW this directory is used for VMware backups and what sort of maintenance is supposed to happen on it. I'm fairly certain that snapshot info files are not supposed to simply pile up in here indefnitely. Because as my previous issue pointed out - eventually hundreds of thousands of these info files starts to cause *actual* backup problems with VMware backups. So... here's the scenario - 3 Symantec appliances (2.6.0.3) media servers backing up many hundreds of VMs. These snapshot files start to pile up: APPLIANCE 1: maintenance-!> ll *deninfrap10* I am currently integrating a NetBackup Appliance 5220, and I am now detailing the SAN configuration. The intended use is to zone the the NBU appliance to the same LUNs as the ESX hosts and thus leveraging the SAN transport mode to pull the backups over Fibre Channel. I have configured this in another vendor's backup solution and I'm fairly confident I can make it work. However, this appliance already has a tape library connected via FC, and as such one of two available FC ports is used as the tape out port. From reading the documentation, Symantec suggests to only use an FC port in one mode, FT SAN client (which I am not intending to use), replication between appliances (not currently in the scope, I only have one appliance although that might change), VMware integration (my intended use) and tape out (what I already am using). I also read that on my current release, 2.6.0.2, multipathing to SAN LUNs is supported. I cant' find any device specific details, in my case it is an HP 3Par 7400 array. However, if the suggestion is that I reserve one port for tape out, a consequence would be that I can only use one remaining port as the initiator to connect to the VMware datastores. Not really multipath, although this single initiator could still be spread across several target ports in the array I suppose. Also, I, as well as the VMware people, are a bit apprehensive about presenting datastore LUNs to a third party host which is running Linux. Are we absolutely sure nothing will ever happen in the appliance, causing it to go nuts and overwrite data? In another environment I could present the LUNs as read-only to the backup host on the array level, thus eliminating this fear. I am not sure the 3Par array has this capability though. Comments are appreciated.Solved1.2KViews0likes4CommentsVMware backup over SAN: Appliance to ESX zoning
Guys, I have a Solaris based Master server and 5 x 5220 Appliances (media). I am interested to configure VMware backup over SAN. I need confirmation on whether zoning between Appliance (media server)to ESX is required? If yes, then Appliace is Initiator, what mode the ESX HBA port is supposed to be in? thanks all..Solved2.5KViews0likes6CommentsAppliance 5230 problem with Vm conversion vmware
Hi, i have a problem for restore a physical server with vm conversion. in my case my appliance is a master/media i have copied the vmtools iso into the /tmp to the appliance The gui ask me to choose the vmtools vmware when i brows my appliance, i can choose the iso, but when i run the pre-check, i was failed. i think, it's not the good method, but i don't find any docuements about vm conversion with appliance.
