BUEX 12.5 not recognizing LTO tape.

Are tapes recognized when you do an inventory on the drive ?

Everytime you swap the tapes Backup Exec will not be able to detect the new tape immediately. The new/ replaced tape will be detected only when you run the job or when you run an Inventory job.

Its always suggested to run an Inventory job after the tapes are replaced which will show the tapes then.

Well my purpose for the post is not to do anything but pop in a new tape.  I have just swapped tapes and will wait until 7PM for the job to start to see if in fact the tape is detected and the jub runs.

It shouldn't run unless you have done an inventory, and at a push have bar code labels installed that it can scan...

For a stand-alone drive, it will not be detected until the job actually starts

You either have to train yourseld (and/or your tape operators) to run an inventory, or else set up a BEMCMD job to do the inventory, and then run that with Windows Task Scheduler for sometime after the tapes are swapped and before the next job starts

Just to clarify.  I see no reaon to run an inventory.  I simply want to swap tapes and not worry about it until the next day.  So when the job starts it will detect the tape, then run the job, correct?

Yes. I think that should work provided that the tape is not overwrite protected and has already been used in same installation of Backup Exec. But without Inventory you will not be able to see the tape before the job runs. Also if the tape is brand new and has not been used at all in this installation of Backup Exec and then Inventory is highly neccessary.

Thank you.  I know what's on the tape from previous weeks, so i do not want to run a inventory.  This is not complicated.  Swap tape, walk away, job runs/finishes swap tape again.

Try it and see if it works. If it doesn't, it's because BE doesn't know what is available to it in the drive itself...the Inventory command does the trick.

An automated Inventory command can be configured in BECMD (like Ken said), or scheduled through BE itself to run say 5 minutes before your job...both allow you to put a tape in and walk away!
