Exchange 2010 - AVVI Logfile truncation

Hi all,

we are using backup exec 2010 as a vm running on vsphere 5. We backup via avvi with grt.

Problem ist that no exchange logfiles are being truncated.

Please help

Thank

Alex

  • Do you have the Exchaneg 2010 Management Tools installed on the BE server ?
And are you running BE 2010R3 SP1 ?

  • Hmm well in ESX 4.x that should work, so it might be something new for 5.x environments, as such I'd suggest that we might need a formal support case to look into the problem.

BTW for anyone looking at this post but running SQL, we cannot truncate SQL logs files with AVVI or FULL Agent backups, you have to run a log backup to truncate them.

  • no, there aren´t no Exchange Management Tools an the BE2010 Server.

    We run R3 SP1 - latest fixes, yes !

  • there are no exchange mgmt tools installed. do we need these ?

we are running r3 with sp1 latest patches.

  • ok, and then it truncates the exchange 2010 logs ?

    strange thing !

If we backup with "normal" remote agent it truncates without exchange management tools installed

  • We just had a small brainstorm with a colleague over this and we think we know why.

When you do a remote agent backup of an Exchange server, then it is the remote agent on the Exchange server itself that does nearly all of the communication into Exchange and this remote agent therefore has direct access to the library files that are part of Exchange Management.

However when you do an AVVI backup (without GRT)  the remote agent on the media server does nearly all the work so needs the support files from the Exchange management. Note the remote agent requirement inside the VM for GRT over AVVI is purely to get metadata for the GRT information, the processing of the backup itself is still done by the media server.

Also just because you may have seen a Remote Agent Exchange backup apparently work in your environment without the Managerment Tools installed, does not mean that in some environments something won't work, hence we specify these tools as a support requirement in the document that has already been posted in this thread.
