How many log files?

Backup Exec 2010 deduplication creates a lot of log files. And I mean a lot - like over one million for a backup of 1.5TB of data.

Is there a way to reduce this or even turn off logging?

Thanks, Rob.

  • Those logs are internal to Dedup and its by design

Debug logs are generated at X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\logs

  • If you are using Backup Exec R1 or Backup Exec R2 then those logs are generated by design. This is improved in Backup Exec R3 and the number of Dedupe logs generated are minimized in BE 2010 R3.

So if possible it is advised to upgrade to BE 2010 R3 as its a free upgrade as the same license keys will be used.

  • We're already on R3 and what's this "by design" mean? You mean it's been designed to generated millions of log files? Rather strange design. If they are log files, I assume I can delete them whilst the system is idle?

    Cheers, Rob.
