migrate BE from 11d to 2012 on a different machine

Hi, is there documentation or instructions available on migrating the catalog from BE 11d to BE 2012?  The current machine running 11d is a windows server 2003 and the new machine running 2012 will be windows server 2008.

thanks!

  • Direct upgrade/migrate from BE 11d to 2012 is not possible. You need to have BE 12.5 minimum.

    Refer http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH178545

Upgrade first to BE 12.5 or 2010. Then install BE 2012 on new machine and follow the below TN to migrate.

  • Sul -

IF you are committed to BE2012 at this time.. (Symantec is doing much work at this point to quickly 'improve' BE2012)

I would recommend that you look carefully at the time that is potentially involved in a 'conversion' through multiple versions vs. a completely clean and fresh start with BE2012.  The fresh start may mean you are required to re-catalog a large amount of off-site storage (or not).

Having already done a 'fresh start' on BE2012 3 times (and now looking toward a 4th because of unexpected hardware changes), I'm on the side of 'fresh start' and would recommend that. - In other words, put BE2012 on the new server and start building from day X in time forward, not even trying to bring across old catalogs, bkfs, etc.

If you need to restore something that was done prior to BE2012, then retrieve and catalog just those media as needed.

    YMMV

    Good Luck,

  • David,

thanks for the tip and for sharing your experience with 2012!  Will very much consider re-cataloging as needed.
