Novice questions

Currently we are using MS Windows' scheduled backup to perform tape backups. However, as the volume of data has grown, compression functionality of Windows 2000 could no longer hold the data onto 20/40 GB DAT tapes. So we are looking for a viable solution to fit the data into DAT tapes. So here are few questions:
1. Is VERITAS Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers the answer?
2. Does VERITAS Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers perform hardware/software compression before loading backups onto tapes?
3. How much data can be compressed using VERITAS Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers into the existing 20/40 GB DAT tapes?
4. Can we use the Windows Restore process to recover data from the tape? Or do we have to use VERITAS Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers software to restore data as well?
5. What is the cost of VERITAS Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers? Do we have to procure seperate licenses for different servers or how does it work?
TIA,
shisir

  • Hi,

Backup Exec makes use of "hardware compression" and software compression" as well.

"Hardware compression" purely depends upon the extent to which the hardware can compress the data.

For more informatiopn on difference between hardware compression and software compression please refer to the following document

Backups fail to get double the amount of the native capacity recorded to a media, even when hardware compression is being utilized.

If the data was backed up using Backup Exec then it is recommended to use Backup Exec for restore as well.

The tapes can be recataloged with NTBACkUP as well and then the data can be restored.

A base licence is required for the server where the software is installed.
Remote Agent for Windows Servers is a paid option and has to be installed on all the other remote servers which need to be backed up.

Additionally there are Backup Exec Agents (paid options) available for Exchange bakcups, SQL backups, Oracle backups etc and the corresponding licences should be entered on the Backup Exec Media Server.

One Remote Agent for Windows Servers license is included with all Backup Exec agents that require the license

    Hope the above information helps.
