Well having a defined size for small, medium and large would be too easy!

Personally I would class 40-50 servers as medium. I assume you mean one media server backing up 40-50 servers, not 40-50 backup (media) servers managed by another media server?

Backup Exec can handle installations of that size. Have a look at http://www.backupexecfaq.com/component/option,com_poll/Itemid,21/task,results/id,5/ - some people are backing up many more servers than that.
