Best Practice for DFSR Backup of large data

Hi All,

I'm trying to backup DFSR enabled folder whose size is around 1.2TB. With Shadow Copy Component the backup is taking almost around 20 hours to complete. Once I stop the replication service and takes a full backup, it takes 12 hours to complete. My acceptable backup windows is 14 hours and hence with SCC backup I'm not able to complete the backup on time.

Also, does the SCC backup always behaves as a FULL backup? My incremental backup always backs up complete data and due to this I can't use this option for my incrementals also as it's exceeding the window.

I would like to know any best practice available for DFSR backup with SCC. (Don't prefer to stop the dfsr service)

Would accelerator do any good for this situation?

My Environment:

NetBackup Appliance 5230 acts as both Master & Media Server

Appliance Version - 2.6.1.2

Master Server Netbackup Version - 7.6.1.2

Client Server - Windows 2012, NBU Version - 7.6.0.1

  • The first accelerator full backup took 18 hours for 1.2TB size data. I ran another full backup and it took just 3 hours. So accelerator is the solution indeed.

Mike_Gavrilov Thanks for confirming about accelerator.

Nicolai Thanks for the suggestion of the correct SCC backup selection for the incremental's to run as expected.

  • Hi Nicolai,

As you suggested, the incremental backups are now working as expected after specifying the backup path as Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\

But the throughput is very low for the incremental backups. The first accelerator enabled full backup ran with a throughput around 25MB/s, but the incrementals are running only with 5 to 6MB/s. I'm using the default buffer values currently. Will tweaking the values improve the backup performance for SCC?

Hi Marianne - Yes, we are planning to upgrade soon.

  • Hi Guys,

Thank you for the points. I will run an accelerator enabled full backup with Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders\ as the backup selection. And will monitor the next day's incremental backup to see how it goes.

      PLEASE upgrade your NBU version.
NBU 7.6.x is no longer supported plus there were bugs with DFSR backups in older NBU versions.

  • DFS-R has to be protected thru Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\ to avoid all backups being full. DFS-R backup are in general slow, that it the nature

    My two cent:

    • do not run backup of local drives (e.g C: D:)  and Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\ at the same time
    • No more than 2 concurent streams stream below Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\
